Oh dear, I knew the storm was coming, but hoped that you would get back before it hit. Just glad that you survived unscathed, other than a little wet!
I rode out the storm inside my boat as I hadn't quite finished up when it hit. I was curious to see if any leaks would occur and everything was nice and dry. Nice to know for future outings. Happy sailing to you as well.

Joe was there, but his buddy Tim did the real work. We motored my boat across the Bohemia River to Susan's marina. On the return, I dropped Tim off at the gas dock as a storm rolled up, and I beat feet for the mooring. Just as I approached the hook, I was blasted with a a gust that made it impossible to hold onto the buoy pennant. I was nearly blown over by the blast. The motor was off and rudder up, so I had no control.
I spend the next half hour making passes at the mooring but always being blown off course. And the motor kept dying. Tim (safe and dry in my car 200 yds. away) lost sight of me because of the driving rain. At least I got to see the cockpit drains in action (nice design Stan). I was going to ride it out, but it just wouldn't let up. I finally got the idea to reverse the boat into the wind and pick up the line from the stern. I had much more control that way, though the waves had the prop out of the water a lot. I looped the mooring line over my winch (I know dangerous) but there was not way I could walk it forward in the gale. I attached another line to the bow cleat, and tied that to the mooring line. It made a long mooring pennant, but it was on the hook.
I was wet as an Navy mop and unwilling to sit there and wait, so into the dinghy I went. It was a slow row ashore. Tim said that I just appeared through a wall of rain rowing toward the dock. There was a good five gallons of rain water along for the ride, too. I have never bee so glad to roll out of the dinghy and onto the dock.

This is not a complaint. In fact, I loved it. Since I retired, my life has been lacking the rush of police work. I got a fix yesterday. Now, I know why I retired. I am not thirty anymore... or fifty!

Susan, you'll be glad to hear that the rain cured me of the heat stroke "tight wire' I walked all afternoon. We had a good experience, solved the problem and learned something. When I haul the John Dawson in the fall, we're going to do a cautionary fix on my main, now that we know what we are doing. Happy sailing, and see you around.

Joe Camp and his buddy get the good deed of the year award for helping me fix my broken mail sail yesterday in the sweltering heat. The problem was just as several of you speculated, the tab at the top of the sail had torn off its attachment. It turned out that the repair could be done without removing the furling tube completely, it was pulled out just enough for the tube to be turned to access the spot we needed through the slot in the mast.
The bracket that the tab had been attached to was removed and two screws with washers were placed just below the tab through the reinforced part of the sail and into the furling tube. Pictures are attached. The vice grip pliers that someone had recommended were useful to keep tension on the sail while the first screw was placed. Stan had recommended this as an acceptable fix for the problem. One screw might had been sufficient, but we decided to put in two just to be safe. So all is good and I have my boat back!! I can't adequately express my appreciation to everyone on this list and especially to Joe for all the assistance given.
