Ok Bob, "the chain is as strong as it's weakest link". In the past I used an old rubber glove fastened with rubber bands around the top. With the cap in the tank and the cap open, you should easily be able to do the following: cut the tip of a small finger off and attempt to blow into the tank. If the tank is permitting venting it will permit you to blow into the tank. When the valve is closed, no fumes/air can travel in either direction. If the tank can't vent it will run till the pressure within get's to great for the engine pump and the engine will starve, especially near idle speeds. a poor hose connection anywhere in the line can simulate the same...
   1. will motor run with gas line inserted into tank cap opening , cap removed, without cutting out? If yes, it is not the engine, nor is it the fuel. However, be sure to check the bottom of the tank a water / gas fillup can be a possible cause. .... which is the location that condensed water would be located... It would be the gas cap., not the pump bulb, tubing , engine connector or engine. If the answer is NO, then start eliminating via bipass direct from engine connection to open gas tank. If it runs, it is not the engine connector or engine. The problem could be one component or more of the gas line. Therefore.........
  2. check the rubber pump bulb if a leak is present and you fail to be able to obtain a firm bulb with the gas line connect to the gas tank. I would check the engine and tank connectors to be sure they are open. You can check the engine one by pushing the pressure relief stem noting a flow of fuel.

My gas line is less than a year old - new with the tank last September. Plus,
I
have only used marine fuel without methanol. How do you test a gas vent? I
turn
it clockwise to close it and counter-clockwise fully to open it. I
didn't know
about pushing on it (as Geoff mentioned) to make it release
pressure. Seems
like if there is pressure in there, it won't be able to pull
air in very well.
