Chris:

We have an iPad version 1 (with GPS) running iNavx since 2011 and have been
very happy with it. Have it in Otter Box and mounted via a Ram mount to the
right of the cockpit. Do need a Bimini up during the day as the sun can
overheat it and it shuts down - and helps with seeing it. The NOAA chart
updates are free with iNavx. If also is integrated with Ayetides for tidal
info. You can turn on the data plan and get weather radar as needed. The
Otter Box case is not 100% weather proof so we have a plastic sleeve can
slip over it if (rarely) needed. I think later Otter Boxes are more
weatherproof.

We also have mounted a Garmin GPS III Plus showing only speed and it is
wired into the VHF for DSC/GMDSS.

The same as it is seeing your iPhone or Android outside in the sun. The
newer model screens seem to get better and better especially in the sun.
That said, it can be somewhat difficult if it's really really bright at the
right angle to sun. However, all things considered I find the trade off well
worth it. I tend to use the Bimini if it's really sunny.

Cheers,
Ted

can run on both devices iPhone and iPad. It can also act as a repeater using
a wifi connection by transferring NMEA data over TCP/IP. In other words to
can connect to other boat instruments like autopilot, AIS, speed, wind, and
depth. Obviously, this isn't something we use on our small boats, but you
could if you really want to. It's the full featured option and runs about
$50 in the App Store.

iPad that has wifi and cellular data (4G LTE) as well. The latter has a
built in GPS while the former will require a separate GPS device like a Bad
Elf and Garmin GLO. These little devices give your wifi only iPad a GPS
capability using Bluetooth. I've found my Garmin Glo to be highly accurate
and I hear great things about the Bad Elf gizmo as well.
