The navionics with the sonar chart option seems to work best for me. It also includes detailed land information that some of the other applications seem to lack. I don't have an internet connection on the ipad but do have the bad elf for gps location. I can also use my iphone as a hotspot to provide internet connection to the ipad.

One major problem I have with the ipad is that the boat position on the charts is off by a couple of hundred feet or so. When sitting at my slip the device shows my location on land in the middle of the GW Parkway. The iphone position is fine and accurate. navionics returned my email inquiry about this and noted it is a problem with apple ios.

The second problem i have with the ipad is visibility in bright sunlight. I find the iphone placed just inside the cockpit coaming in shade provides a more readable image even though the screen is a lot smaller and also has the correct boat location.

I will be experimenting with the ipad to see if I can figure out how to work around the location issue. Has anyone else noticed this problem? The navionics email is below.

Dear Chris Cowie,

Thank you for contacting Navionics.

We have not tested our apps with any 3rd party external GPS receivers. These devices may function with our apps, but since we have not tested them, we cannot guarantee their functionality.

The issue you are experiencing with the external GPS is not stemming from Navionics. It is due to the all external GPS units not working w/ iOS devices after the update to iOS. It is not a fix that Navionics can do, it will come from the next iOS update. This is the message found on Dual GPS website forum "There is a bug in iOS 8.3 which blocks position information coming from Bluetooth GPS devices. The symptom is that your GPS looks like it is working, but your apps do not show your location. (Not all apps are affected, but most are.) The problem affects the XGPS150, XGPS160 and XGPS170 as well as Bluetooth GPS devices from other manufacturers. We have contacted Apple it, and they are aware of the issue. We do not have an ETA from them for a fix, but they are treating it as a priority. In the meantime, some (but not all) users are getting around the bug by turning off Location Services, rebooting the iOS device, and turning Location Services back on. - See more at: http://gps.dualav.com/faq/xgps150-150a-150e/#sthash.dMYaO0kX.dpuf"

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Well looks like I have entered electronics zone. I lay aside my Commodore computer, my floppy discs and brick phone and take the plunge. Kidding aside I am excited to be doing this. I'll spend a week but no more getting the boat ready and leave around the 20th of June or a bit sooner. We will try and meet up with the NW rally for a week and extend it for a week or two then fly back for my son's wedding, then back to Canada and Desolation Sound. That should give me time to practice and get comfortable with the electronic navigation. It is all line of sight (when there is no fog) and lots of navigation aids and landmarks so I can constantly monitor my conclusions and suppositions with traditional triangulation and basic GPS.
By the time we head down to Mexico Alice and I should be pretty fluent in iPad navigation. By the time we cross over to the Bahamas in the spring next year I think any bugs and glitches will all be worked out and Alice and I can sit back and enjoy the technology. I'll be back on when I need some advice and won't be shy about asking. Thanks again everyone.
