[Rhodes22-list] crossing the Sea of Cortez

At 5 pm this afternoon we sailed out or San Carlos on the west coast of mainland Mexico to cross over to Baja.  The forecast was for 16 to 20 knots from the NNW and 3 foot seas. Since our heading for this 75 mile overnight crossing was around 220 degrees it was within the abilities of our Rhodes, my wife and myself. 

The winds were 20 knots steady, seas 3 to 5 feet, short, about 4-5 seconds. The problem was the wind was from 270 degrees so it would be a nasty wet beat for the next 18 hours.  Shortly after we caught the top of a wave so it broke over my wife's head I asked her if it was still fun.  The long version was "NO".  So we watched the sun set as we headed back to San Carlos.  After 3 months of sailing in British Columbia at least the water isn't as cold down here in Mexico but the beer is.  Next weather window is a week away so we will just do some local sailing until then.  

There is a site if you are interested to see what long term cruising is like on a Rhodes 22.   It is under construction and is written by my wife.  Right now we have published through mid-July covering the San Juan Islands.  Alice will be bringing it up to date to cover the southern coast of British Columbia, Lake Mead and of course sunny (and windy) Mexico.  In the spring we will sail down the west coast of Florida and the keys then over to the Bahamas.  That portion will hopefully include any interested Rhodies on parts of the trip.  You'll have to wait until next summer for the Italian installments.
