[Rhodes22-list] masthead light

Hi friends:

True on the "under power / under sail" distinctions. This is why, using an independent switch on the masthead light, we simply turn it off when under sail at night (a proposition which can't imagine for myself) and use the port, starboard & stern lights. Ergo, we comply; and we have no tangled wire issues to cloud the prospective blue skies our boating days, which are already chock full of dire concerns like how much sunscreen to apply, what sandwich to pack for lunch, cell phone off or cell phone on and, "should I tack or should I jibe?"

Of course, that's just me. I have the retired man's sense of where to stick those complex details (and with a little ribald imagination, you can guess where that might be).  Though I have a fierce love for those who do like the details.  You guys take the pressure off of me.  When I encounter a vexing problem, I run to the list and see what the "details people" have to say.  Then, I invent some less detailed way of doing that thing, and bingo! everyone is happy.  Then we sail.  Then we sail.

Under power we can show an all round light as a steaming light. Under sail at night we show the stern light with
the two side lights. The power for the anchor light can be switched to the stern light when motoring.
This is from the Coast Guard Auxiliary textbook for their “Sailing Skills and Seamanship” course, sixth edition.
