When I removed mine I expected to have to replace the thru-hull with a new
one but found it to be quite salvageable.

>From what I can see, thru-hulls can be made of bronze, plastic, nylon or
Marelon - which is probably a nylon brand name. Plastic might be fine for
above the waterline use but for something below the waterline like the
cockpit drain you want to use the nylon, Marelon or bronze. The one on my
boat was nylon of some sort and is very tough. What looked to be cracks
turned out to just be superficial scratches. Given the cost of a new one I
decided to clean up and reinstall my old one. I assume that my thru-hull was
original and my boat is a 76 so I would expect that anything made since then
would also be equipped similarly.

The tube between the cockpit drain and the thru-hull is curved slightly as
the thru-hull needs to be off center in order to have a flat surface on the
outside of the hull. I found that I could not get the tube on once the
cockpit scabbard and the thru-hull were in place. So I had to remove the
thru-hull, attach the tube to the scabbard barb and then insert the barb end
of the thru-hull into the tube while installing it. Don't forget to put the
nut over the barb before it goes into the tube. You want to tighten down the
nut before the sealant begins to cure or you will not likely be able to get
a good seal.

Alternatively, you could install the thru-hull first, then the hose and
finally the scabbard. Normally that would be the preferred approach but in
my case I had installed a flush mounted scabbard and removing it would have
been more than a pain. Either way you need to cut the tubing to fit
carefully as if it is too long you will be unable to tighten the nut and the
outside flange of the thru-hull will not seat properly. Do careful dry
fittings before you apply sealant. I didn't and of course I had to do it
all again. I suggest that you use 3m 4200 rather than 5200 sealant. If you
need to remove it again, as I did, at least the 4200 make this chore
possible while if you use the 5200 you will probably need to buy a new boat.

I cant tell if my cockpit drain through hull is full of fine cracks or if
its just reinforcing fibers in the plastic.
Any ideas?
