[Rhodes22-list] Boat Show? centerboard line route

Here is a crude diagram of how mine is set up on a 76 boat. The difference between this and Rob's is that the line starts at the cap rather than the centreboard. In Ron's case there will be three attachment points on the centerboard while with mine there are just two.

Frankly, I would not worry too much about the route you take. Using blocks should make raising the centerboard easier but apparently some have dispensed with the blocks altogether. I tested that myself and found that the weight on the line was substantial and aside for the effort to raise it, that put a lot more strain on the cleat. It may be, however, that the newer "diamond" centerboards require less effort to raise.

Depends on your setup, but here is one possible routing. - Rob

Might search the archives, but I remember a diagram of being posted of the pendant and associated blocks, I believe it listed the length of line needed.

I agree with Graham. Use the yacht braid (anyone know the ideal length needed?). Yours probably was replaced with inferior line. Keep an eye out for something sharp. I wouldnt whip the line.

I would skip the whipping and try to find out what is fraying the line. Mine is still good after 40 years so I expect there is some rough edge rubbing on the line that might be corrected fairly easily.

Fandango's been on the hard for a few years while I went through some major changes but I finally got her in the water this summer and remembered why I like this boat so much. I've done quite a bit of much-needed maintenance and still more to come but the centerboard line was about to break so that's the priority now.

I'm thinking a whipping right where it gets cleated would be a good idea so long as it doesn't bulk up the line too much to slide through the hole. While I have the line out I might drill that hole just a little bigger. I never want to do this job again so an anti-chafe whip came to mind.

I counted 56 bolts around the trunk! They're ss phillips heads (many stripped out heads at that -- don't know why they'd be stripped -- how many times has the trunk been removed?) with washers and lock nuts. It's a royal PITA removing even the bolts with the good heads to say nothing of the stripped ones! I got about half of them off and quit for the day.
