[Rhodes22-list] My Elton Memory

When Elton, all by himself, delivered my boat in August it was nearly 100 degrees in North Carolina. He was three hours late, and when I called Stan to find out where the errant Elton may be, he simply didn't know.  He told me that for nine dollars, I could keep him.  I tried to bargain, but Stan was firm.
I was a youngster at 56, and Elton ran circles around me.  He drank no water, though we pleaded with him. And he did fine.  God forbid that he had to go back to the truck to get something, because he took teeny-weeny Artie Johnson ("Laugh-in") steps, and we could have taken productive naps waiting for him to return with the needed piece.

In the end, he performed flawlessly (aside from backing up the trailer to launch) and we splashed with success.  When all was done, I tipped him large and sent him back to Edenton (hoping that he would find it again, and expecting a message from Stan demanding the nine dollars). We still tell the Elton stories today. So, I suppose (as they say) thinking about the dead keeps hem alive.  Tomorrow is the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death.  I wonder if he's waiting for Elton to arrive.

Based on my experience, Will Shakespeare may have a long wait.
Goodbye Elton, and all of my love to those who are missing you.

When I arrived at the GB plant in Edenton this morning, I was informed that Stan had just left to attend the funeral of his brother, Elton.

I only knew of Elton from reading the archives of this list, but I know he was liked and admired by many on the list who had the privilege of meeting him.

Stan's crew was on hand to familiarize me with my new (recycled) boat, and complete the purchase, but more about that later.
