Dave,

You’re in Greenwich, right? That’s actually about 2 hours from Coventry. I used to get down that way pretty frequently towing a portable sawmill, but that’s another story, and I gave that life up.

Stan is recycling an 88 for me. The plan is go full time trailer-sailor; no slip, no mooring, launch and retrieve every time. This approach obviously doesn’t lend itself to day-sailing, so what I have in mind is more in the way of pocket-cruising; something in the range of 3 to 6 nights. As you’ve probably figured out, I’ve managed to retire while still in good enough health to make this feasible.

I’m thinking my primary cruising area would be eastern Long Island Sound, Fishers Island Sound, Block Island Sound, and Gardener and Peconic Bays. That should be enough to keep me busy for a while, but there’s also Narragansett Bay, Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod, Marthas Vineyard, Nantucket, and the entire coast of Maine. It’s likely that my eyes are bigger than my stomach, but it’s easy to dream in February.

One of the issues that I’m going to have to deal with in chasing this dream is finding boat launch ramps where long term parking is allowed or can be arranged for somehow. In Connecticut, there are no parking time limit rules posted at the state ramps I’ve checked, or online that I can find. When I called the state, and eventually reached the appropriate person, I was told “one night” pretty emphatically. We’ll have to see if this is enforced. In Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine, there seems to be more flexibility, especially at ramps run by towns as opposed to the states.

I could go on, but that’s enough for now…
