The ASA 101 course helps if you want to rent a sailboat somewhere for daysailing. ASA 104 is needed to rent a cruising overnight boat. With it there are no questions asked. You have to take a separate course (ASA 114) for renting a cruising catamaran.

I’m sure ASA 101 is a fine course, but based on the practice test that’s in my course booklet, I doubt it would be useful preparation for taking the state test. For example, it probably wouldn’t teach you that a PWC loses all ability to steer when not under power (which I didn’t know), or that it’s illegal to tow someone on a tube that doesn’t have handles (which I might have guessed).

I think I’ll pass on the ASA 101 course. I took a look at the curriculum, and its pretty basic stuff. I’m sure I’d learn a few things, I don’t feel that it would be enough to justify the time or expense.

I’m going to guess that these people will not be a danger to themselves or to others on the water, but that probably would be true even if they hadn’t taken the course.

Remember these new state courses are meant for the young out of work college crowd. They are highly educated but have little to no practical experience in anything.
