[Rhodes22-list] Sailing right angles

I have been frustrated with not being able to sail any better than about
110-120 degrees on a close haul. I made several adjustments recently and am
happy to report being able to tack in the nineties. First changed from a
180 to a 130 head sail, then lost five pounds, added a five gallon jug of
water ballast forward of the v berth and tightened the aft stays. I think
Phillip Rhodes did not take into account the extra motor and gas can weight
most of us add to the aft end of our boats and I think the added water
balast helps balance the boat. I was able to test this at low tide on the
potomac River having sailed down wind toward the national mall and needing
to make my way back up wind toward Alexandria va in a very narrow deep water
area to re enter the channel back to my marina at the national sailing
marina this past Saturday. Next trick is to replace my wooden tiller with
that nice new shinny fiberglass one to make the boat go faster. If that
doesn't work I will resort to more rum in memory of our great rummy.
