What a positive legacy, and this is just a tiny tip of the iceberg. It is
not that he delivered boats it is that he affected so many in such a
positive way. Thank you Elton.

Hi Lou:

I have just re-read your great description of the repairs that you made to
the centerboard housing sides. I have a suggestion for others who might be
tempted such a repair as well as a question for you.

The suggestion:

As your description implies, measurement of the slot is a devilish difficult
problem to solve so I thought I would share how I eventually addressed this
problem. As you know, the slot is not just a symmetrical rectangular hole.
It is tapered along its length and height and this makes it difficult to
measure. Also, just measuring the width of the hole doesn't necessarily tell
you which side of the hole the problem is on. Measuring from the centerline
was a challenge I could not overcome. Also, lugging the board in and out of
the boat repeatedly and lifting it into the slot to check for points of
friction was exhausting - especially for an old guy like me.

As it turned out the solution to both problems was to make from a strip of
plywood a piece that has the shape and dimensions of the midsection and
widest part of the centerboard along its length. I put a cross pin at the
pivot point so the piece could be lowered and raised with a string like the
centerboard. By making this template in my shop I could be sure the sides
were symmetrical around the centreline and thereby tell, when placed in the
slot, which side of the hole had insufficient clearance. That at least gave
me a good idea of where the trouble spots were which I could then check with
the actual centreboard. If anyone would like a picture of my template just
let me know. To measure the thickness of the centerboard at its thickest
point I made extended calipers very similarly those shown in Lou's
description. I thought I was brilliant at the time but now realized that the
idea came from Lou. So much for genius.

The question:

I am wondering why you went the route of using G20 panels as patches -
whatever G20 is. Why did you not gradually fill the voids in the sides with
layers of thickened epoxy ultimately covered by a few layers of cloth?
Fitting patches for such an inaccessible space seems daunting to say the
least and I worry about any unfilled gaps that might be hidden between the
patch and the concrete.

One other point, when I was examining my keel I came to realize that there
were substantial voids within the keel itself. The voids were not at the
surface but extended right into the core. I have no idea whether they were
there from the start of reflected erosion through the cracks in the bottom
of the keel mentioned above. I drilled multiple holes through the outside of
the keel and down into the keel through the cabin sole. I then injected
almost three GALLONS of

I don't know if I need to go the full route that you followed - I hope not -
but I seem to have some of the same symptoms. I had had no trouble removing
the board in the first place making me think that the sidewalls were still
in place. I had large cracks at the very bottom of the hole where the sides
of the cavity and the bottom of the keel join. The boat had been on shore
for about 4 years when I understood to dig out and then fill the cracks with
epoxy and cover the area in several layers of cloth. I "thought" the
clearances were sufficient by making what were crude and totally inadequate
measurements. When I reinstalled the board the gap was insufficient. As the
comment above makes clear, measuring is far more complicated that one might
think at first.

I have ground out the marrow places primarily by using a 1 1/2" rotary
sanding drum on the end of a 2' bit extender and powered by my electric
hammer drill. I now need to again repair that area without simply making the
gap too small again. I do NOT want to have to do this a third time. That
might be the straw that.....

I just want to chime in w my info on my 81 c/b restoration job.
I posted the entire job on the Rhodes22 OWNERS site. Its readable as a pdf
file w illustrations. Roger Pihlaja helped me write the text especially the
parts about the chemistry of cement and how it can impede the board travel
if the trunk swells like mine did.

http://www.rhodes22.org/rhodes/r22boardtrunk.pdf

I would second all the remarks about getting the boat on stands. No serious
repairs can be made to the trunk, CB when on the trailer.

feel free to ask questions no matter how mundane they may seem. This is a
tough job. IT took me a full year to restore mine but its been worth it!

My 81 sails upwind nicely w the board 3/4 down!

Kim and I took two days to make the trip from Edenton back home to Connecticut via the inland route (interstates 95, 64, 81, and 84), avoiding the major metropolitan areas. There were no major events. The new dual axle trailer towed well, though it would sometimes fishtail a bit if I pushed the speed much above 65 mph.

The boat is currently sitting in my driveway. I need to get it registered before I can put it on the mooring in Groton. While I have it close to hand, I?ll try to get it at least minimally provisioned, and see if there are any modifications or enhancements I want to make. Nothing major at this point, I?m sure.

For the past couple of years, I?ve been making videos of my backpacking trips and posting them on YouTube. I enjoy the process, so I?m sure I?ll be doing some boat related videos in the not too distant future. I?ll let you know when that happens, but I?ll warn you in advance that I?m not afraid to make them long.

Jerry, or others with Lake Erie launching experience: My Kentucky Lake trip may be changed by T storms!!! Time is blocked off the schedule, its too late to change dates now. The boat is back on the hard, and loaded. OK weather to drive / rig Friday and Monday, but T storms are predicted all weekend. If its just rainy or scattered storms I'll hang by the marina and not travel much of the lake, but if its all day I'm kind of stuck. I was looking at Sandusky bay as semi protected water for a backup destination (inland canoeing in Indiana between storms and a hotel as plan D for desperation). Looking at google, I found East Harbor State Park's West harbor marina as a launch site, but that puts me directly into the lake proper. Is there a good launch facility or marina in the bay itself that anybody has experience with? I'm wiling to pay for a lift if needed. The water will be COLD and I am not an expert heavy water sailor (more experience in a canoe with big
waves to be honest). Its hard to get time off, I'm desperately trying to salvage the 'vacation'. I'm also looking to protect both Tamiko and the new boat. I'm not eager to drive through Cleveland until I get a better feel for this mighty beast on a trailer. Its now further forward, so the tongue weight is safer. It seemed steady up to 60-65 mph, which may be about right for a heavy high boat behind an explorer? But if the alternative is sitting at home, I'm open to other ideas for a three nights on the water, preferably with marina / restaurant options. Somebody (I forget who) had plugged Cleveland Harbor behind the wall, so I'll watch their weather too. Where did you launch? Alex ColeLark

Stan: I also believe "someone made a mistake" in February when we lost my older brother George one day shy of his 79th birthday to a fellow who should not have been driving.

As you know most of us on the list knew and loved the time we got to spend with your wonderful brother, Elton. He was sincere, entertaining, extremely helpful, humble,.. I could go on for days.

My youngest brother (69) knowing that I was really stunned by losing George, as we were so close, gave me this wisdom: "It is said that the souls of those we love become part of our souls forever." May this give you some comfort!

Bob and Kathy

My sympathies to you, Stan. I have one brother, thankfully still with us, and can only imagine how painful is the loss.

Hello Joe. I didn?t know we had a Rhodie from Ridgefield on the list. I commute TO Ridgefield most days as everyone in town goes the other way. Where do you keep your boat? We?re in Greenwich Cove on a town mooring.

My sincerest condolences to you and the family for the loss of your
brother.

Sadly I never met Elton, but having followed in his foot-steps a little on
my various deliveries, I've met Rhodies who knew him and heard the fond
stories and memories of their time together.

My we all have lives as full and interesting as Elton's

Stan,

My heartfelt condolences on your loss. It was always a pleasure to see
Elton at
the Chicago boat show and sit, talk and try to sell boats. I was there the
time he hit the black ice on I95, but persevered and got the boat to
Chicago.
It did need some cleaning up...

He talked to me about his time in radio in Chicago but I never knew
about his
impact on radio in New York until I saw the obituary in the New York Times.
It is clear from the article that Elton built a institution that was
much loved
in the New York area. I wish I had a chance to talk to him about the music.

Stan,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Elton was a very good person in
every way. I remember when he delivered my first Rhodes back in 96.
Patiently answered all my questions and would not leave till he was sure I
was comfortable sailing the Rhodes on my own.

I?ve put up a video of our adventure up on YouTube. Hopefully, the following link will take you there:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPZsJwUy60s <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPZsJwUy60s>

Just to set expectations, the video is 15 1/2 minutes long, and it?s just about the trip and the new owner orientation in Edenton. There?s very little about the boat itself, and there?s absolutely no sailing. I?ve still never sailed on a Rhodes 22.

I?ll look into putting this up on the Facebook group page as well.

Bruce,

I?m not sure what you saw, there?s no ?crank? on the boom. There are two tangs (I think that?s the right word) on the end. One is for the upper block of the main sheet, the other is for the topping lift. That?s my best guess as to what you might have seen

Stan and Mates;

I have found words that have been of some comfort to me in similar circumstances. Please allow me to share them:

"Even in our sleep, the pain which cannot forget, falls drop by drop upon the heart; until in our despair, and against our will comes Wisdom through the awful Grace of God." - Aeschylus

Be well Stan.

Your friend,

Ben Cittadino

Thanks Peter. I must have been looking at it wrong.

The boats sure are pretty when they're new. You've inspired me to give mine a heavy dose of elbow grease when the weather warms up a bit more.

Bruce,

I?m not sure what you saw, there?s no ?crank? on the boom. There are two tangs (I think that?s the right word) on the end. One is for the upper block of the main sheet, the other is for the topping lift. That?s my best guess as to what you might have seen

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have a new 2008 and a new trailer in
2015 and your video helps me prepare for my future trailer adventures.

As has been repeated many times, we all have memories of Elton - good ones. And stories. What a wonderful legacy to have positively touched so many lives and brought joy to them. Our loss must be the gain of others.
Alice

I am standing by the seashore
A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength,
and I stand and watch
until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sun and sky come down to mingle with each other

Then someone at my side says: "There she goes!"
Gone where? Gone from my sight- that is all.

She is just as large in mast and hull and spar
as she was when she left my side
and just as able to bear her load of living freight
to the places of destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

And just at the moment when someone at my side says, "There she goes!",
there are other eyes watching her coming ,
and other voices ready to take up the the glad shout:
"Here she comes!".

my only sibling and very painful. as I dumped the traditional shovel
of dirt on my kid brother I could not help crying out that someone made
a mistake.
