[Rhodes22-list] Change to diamond shaped CB?

Based on postings to this list over the years, Mary Lou 's comments reflect
my own understanding of the difference between the diamond board and the
older board. It was also my understanding, possibly incorrect, that boats
coming from the plant as refurbished boats have the diamond boards installed
so it is possible that the date of original construction might not always
reflect which board is installed.

I have the original rudder style board that drops into the keel and rotates
on a pin. The centerboard housing cap is removable allowing the centreboard
to be lifted out. Very early boats did not have a removable cap so removing
the centreboard was a much more involved process. My understanding, and I
stand to be corrected, is that this installation and pivot pin arrangement
is the same for the traditional centreboard and the diamond board.

My view is that the diamond board is a refinement that would allow for
slightly improved performance for those who have the knowledge and skill to
take advantage of such things. While I would choose the diamond board in
theory, I would definitely give much greater weight to selecting a boat that
had been maintained in good condition and had the comfort features that I
wanted.

I would be very reluctant about beaching the R22 regardless of the
centerboard used. I don't think the board makes any difference to how the
boat is launched from or retrieved onto the trailer.

In the final analysis, the for the authoritative answer about such matters
you need to ask Stan.

Not sure what the difference in beachability (I wouldn't do it with an R22)
trailerability would be. Both have a slot for the centerboard. the diamond
board as far as I know is just an improved design for the centerboard.

BTW, Fretless is a 1991 with a diamondboard. We actually thought she was a
centerboard boat when we bought her. It wasn't until we saw her up in slings
for bottom painting that we learned she had the diamondboard.
