[Rhodes22-list] My First Hello

Mike's description of what to look out for in old Rhodes makes me think he
must have seen my boat as it is the perfect description of what can go
wrong. My boat had all of those issues and then some. Mind you, nothing that
five or six years of work can't fix.

Steve,

I hope that you are able to find a suitable R22. Stay away from boats that
have significant damage to the centerboard trunk or shoal keel area. These
projects have proven to be too much for some Rhodies. Float tests are
desirable but not always necessary. Most older R22s that are on the hard
have been neglected and leak at various points. The most common problems are
from rain entering poorly bedded or maintained deck hardware including the
ports. This may lead to various amounts of deck softness, delamination and
loose chainplates. Such is the nature of a project boat. Inspection of the
hull is best done on land, not a float test. Look for poorly repaired
sections or damage from improper support or jacking.
