Tough time for all on the east coast with Mathew bearing down.  Since I retired the second time (or was it the third?) we pull the "NoKaOi 3" for hurricane time and hit the road in our little motor home.  Now the worry!  The place where I store the R22 on the trailer has seen better days, so we are hoping that the place withstands the storm while we hide in the NC mountains.

Winds are picking up and it's been raining for last two days. 

Tied down boat on lift to reduce swaying. 

River is up about 18 inches.

Hang in there Ted.  We have a Catalina 387 that is now our home in Ft.
Pierce.  It is on the hard and we are here in Maryland so can't do much.
Wish we had it on a lift (hopeless grin).  Did you remove your jib?  Hope
your drains don't get clogged with debris.  Let us know what happens after
the storm passes.

1.    what would be our best OEM cost in light of our helping to promote 
their unit at our boat show displays.

2.    what would be the savings off our OEM cost if we took our units 
without their costly folding props that normally come included with each 
unit.

3.    can they lend us a /*rejected or non-w*//*orking */unit for our 
physical designing of molds to accommodate the exact dimensions for our 
particular Rhodesinstallations.  (if what they send to us has any value 
to them we can return it)

got some 3 or 4 show follow ups but not a one has so far come near 
placing an order.

I love the idea of an inboard, but one thing it would prevent, is situations like this (attached image) 
At one of my favorite waterfront restaurants, I get Dadventure into a slip where I can pick up my 90 year old father-in-law at dead low tide.
I  can back the boat into this very shallow slip with the rudder up, using the outboard to steer in reverse.

OK, I am confused but can always pull the old age card.

i thought this e-mail went to Chris Cowie, not to Ric.

But as long as I have my wires crossed, why can't the boat be steered in 
reverse with the rudder blade up high enough to clear the shoal bottom?

If all else fails, use the small OB you carry for backup.

It works great - quiet and like stan says - more in the with sailpower

Thanks for the well wishes. Airpower road out the storm on the lift just fine, but our Dock has seen better days. 

Power lines to the lift are cut so I can't lower boat into the water until we restore power.

I am considering purchasing a new outboard for next year and am soliciting opinions on what to buy.  I have heard good things about propane outboards and see that there are now better electric outboards.  I don't travel far from the marina when I go out.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I presently have an older Mercury 9.9 hp which has given me a lot of trouble this year.  The carburetor was replaced and it ran perfectly for about 3 outings and then reverted to its previous problem of idling erratically and stalling easily at slow speeds.  Made docking a little nerve wracking.  The mechanic at my marina has looked at it many times and can't seem to figure out what the problem is.

Susan - I have a Yamaha 8 hp 4 stroke - it has been reliable even in the face of 10% ethanol.  I am in Avalon, so I have both salt water and fairly strong currents.  As the C Bay is mostly fresh where you are, and with lesser currents, I would suggest that whatever your choice, you can downsize from your 9.9.  Less weight is also a plus.

My Yamaha 9.9 runs like a champ but I agree that it's more power than needed. If I were doing it over I'd go with the 8 or look at Stan's new electric unit.

I have a Tohatsu 8 HP four-stroke that I?ve been satisfied with.  I run ethanol-free gas in it, add stabilizer to the gas tank, and run it with the gas line disconnected until it stops when I?m back at the dock (actually, when I?m almost back, as it will continue to run for several minutes with the gas line disconnected).

I have the Yamaha 8 hp and I remove the gas line after each use and let the carburetor run dry.  I also use a water hose to flush out the water system.  Has worked great for the past 8 years.  I would get one of Stan's new electric thru hull motors and might send my boat back to the factory for one next year.

I recommend an electric 

Advantages:
High torque at low speeds mean better control docking.
Does not fail when needed
Quiet. This is one reason we are sailors.
Very low maintenance. 
Light

I use a Minkota salt water 110lb thrust, with a 36 v  40 A-hr LiPo battery
Others have used Torqeedo travel.  The 503 L is the long shaft version at 1.5 hp & retails for $1700, battery included
The 1003 is about 3 hp & costs $2000 retail including battery. I believe you can get it in long shaft

If you buy the solar charger and just use the motor for getting on/off the dock or when the wind dies, you should not need to charge it on the mains.

The torqeedo motors are salt water safe, include the LiPo style batteries, and chargers.  I had to put together the equivalent many years ago before these were available.

I would go propane or electric since you dont motor long distances.
Gas motors do better when ran frequently and long enough to get hot.

I have had a Torqeedo 1003 Long Shaft for 6 years for lake sailing.
Performance has been  flawless. Easy to charge battery at home. Not a motor
for heavy use. In and out of slip, power when wind dies, etc. I can drive
the boat about 14 km at full charge and slow speed (no waves).  Built in
gps is a nice feature.

Like Frank, I have a Tohatsu 8 HP four-stroke.  I have been happy with it and follow the same procedures Frank does.  It weighs in at about 100lbs.  I would prefer something lighter and feel there that 8HP is more than I need for the lake sailing I do.  However, the Georgia coast calls and those tidal rivers might require some reserve horsepower.  I like the sound of Stan's new offering.  Joe Riley Lake Hartwell GA/SC

My YouTube video 'Storage Solutions' featured a cabinet of drawers  
that I installed next to the ice-box.  A list member contacted me  
through YouTube asking me for plans for the cabinet, and he suggested  
that I post them to the list for the possible benefit of others.   
Hopefully, I'm doing that now.

The three .jpg files are 2D images exported from SketchUp, a free 3D  
CAD program I've just started using recently. I'd be willing to share  
the SketchUp file as well, but I'm guessing Mike would have to do some  
admin magic for the file to be accepted (file extension is .skp).

Just one note about the design, the cabinet is sized to fit behind the  
tracks for the sliding doors, and in fact depends on the sliding doors  
to keep the drawers from sliding open on a starboard tack.

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] A lot to be grateful for

I've just had a wonderful weekend of sailing and cruising with the family on
the lakes around Asheville NC. The fall colors are perfect and I couldn't
have asked for finer weather. Quality time was had by all and my 2 grandsons
thought the cockpit of the Rhodes 22 made a wonderful play area.

While i was putting the boat away (mellowed by a couple of classes of
Chardonnay) I stopped to consider how many of us Rhodes 22 owners have had
similar perfect weekend experiences and thought it would be appropriate to
say thanks to Stan and the folks at General Boats for their huge
contribution to our boating pleasures.

Lake Julian, right?  Richard and I are lucky to live around Asheville, 
lucky to be able to sail our Rhodes 22 boats.  I spent yesterday serving 
on the race committee at the "Turkey Shoot" regatta at Lake Keowee, SC, 
where we keep our Rhodes.  It was a gorgeous day, with steady, 
sufficient wind (not always the case for mountain lakes).  After working 
the race, my wife and I relaxed in the cockpit of our boat and admired 
the scenery and the weather (in the 80's on October 30!).

I join in expressing my gratitude to Stan.
