[Rhodes22-list] Rebuilding the Galley

I think that is a fabulous idea but have no idea how one would do that. We
could call it the "Corner for those with wives who think we are crazy".

Graham,

I think that many of us on the list have restored our boats. I spent
several years working on my '81 Rhodes 22 Shanghai'd Summer before
"rescuing" my current '91 Rhodes 22, Wind Lass. Maybe we should create a
separate section as part of www.rhodes22.org to showcase the process and the
results.

Hi Chris:
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I have documented various special
projects in relation to the restoration and taken pictures as I went but
hadn't thought there would be much interest in a more detailed overview of
the project. Also, it seems to me that the list would not be appropriate for
such a longer document. Perhaps I could make a modest web page. As I am
gradually coming to the end of this odyssey the idea of documenting the
project has occurred to me if it would be of use to anyone.

Meanwhile I have been distracted by my other boat restoration project.
Actually, that project(the rebuilding of a 1960 Mason 19' mahogany lapstrake
outboard) took 10 years of summers and was completed about 9 years ago.
However, the restoration of wooden boats never really ends. So now I have
started a rebuilding of the mahogany deck. I have only removed the varnish
on half of the deck so far but have decided to make 1/8" thick mahogany
strips to cover what is currently veneered plywood. Like everything else I
do, it is always the first time I do it so I spend forever just figuring out
how to do it and what materials to use. I am hoping to get much of this work
done on the Mason during the shoulder season so it will not delay the
completion of Agile in the spring next year. My wife just laughs when I make
predictions like that.

There is no rational justification for a major rebuild of an old boat. There
is even less justification to rebuild two boats at the same time. It is
really just a romantic pursuit. Both boats are beautiful old gals that I
just can't leave to die. I have attached a picture of the Mason so you can
see why I have to live with this compulsion.
