I agree with Rick and use mine the same way.  Just be aware that some racing purists may disagree and I've even been chastised by one racer for leaving mine attached when sailing.  But on our boats leaving it attached at all times seems to make sense. - rob

Always leave it attached.  Use it to set the boom level when furling or unfurling the main.  Use it to raise the boom on a reach.  Slacken it when close hauled.
