The smaller solar panels are connected directly to the batteries (or, more specifically, to the batter monitor shunt).  I decided to put my controller in the lazarette, so in order to connect them to the controller, I would have had to run more wires between the cabin and the lazarette, which in my boat is not easy.  Since I’m not worried about the small panels overcharging the batteries, I took the path of least resistance.
