Tom,

That’s an interesting point.  In thinking back now, I can clearly recall that I considered the position of the mast crutch roller to be a fixed point in the design. I think I figured that Stan put the roller where he did for a good reason, and my design should come as close as I could to putting the roller in the same place.  This may have been a case of just wanting to nail down one aspect of the design in order to reduce the number of variables. 

In any case, the cutout gives me place that I can stick my head up above the rest of the frame, and doesn’t seem to have reduced the stiffness of the arch.

But I doubt that raising the mast crutch roller a few inches would have caused any harm either.
