[Rhodes22-list] How to: A Trouble-free Furling Main | Sail Magazine

Jesse,

I don’t keep parts lists for my projects (maybe I should), So I’m reconstructing this after-the-fact.

For the pulley on the underside of the boom, I’m pretty sure I used a Harken 29mm exit block (Defender item# 604915). (Defender labels this a ‘bullet block’, but I’m pretty sure this is a mistake.) This is attached by screws at the ends. The slot GB made in the boom to too long, so I made a new shorter slot. To make the slot, I used a drill bit and router bit made for woodworking. These will easily cut aluminum as well.

The block screwed to the side of the boom at the aft end in a Ronstan 20mm cheek block (# 614283).

The blocks mounted on the gooseneck for the outhaul and furling lines are Ronstan 20mm stand-up blocks (#	614282). You’re right that there’s no real reason for the ’stand-up’ feature. You could save a few bucks by using the standard Ronstan 20mm block (# 614279). On the Defender site, the picture of this item doesn’t show a strap, but the write-up says it comes with one.

I’ve come to use Ronstan blocks as my default choice. They are generally less expensive than other brands, but I’ve never had one fail in any way. So, attached to the Dwyer halyard organizer, I’ve used Ronstan 20mm swivel blocks (#614278), which are very versatile.

Good luck on your projects,

—Peter
