[Rhodes22-list] Keep well

Jeff:

I keep my boat at my home at my dock but in the fall the water drops on lake
Ontario to the point where I have insufficient depth. At that point I moor
the boat in the bay using a mooring I made of steel and concrete that I
guess weights 500 lbs or so. Three or for other boats have been kept on
moorings here the entire season for decades.

Several years ago the chain for one of the boats broke and the boat was
washed ashore. The lesson here is that the owner shackled the mooring chain
directly to the boat - which one should never do. You want the chain to end
at the mooring float and the boat tied to the float with sufficiently strong
and chafe-protected lines. This provides some elasticity to the whole
system. The constant jerking on a chain can easily break it.

Also, make sure that the rudder is well secured and tied facing forward.
Once, in rough circumstances, the lower gudgeon popped out and the rudder
thrashed about for probably a day or more causing a lot of scratches and
gouges to the transom of the boat. I was lucky not to lose rudder.

When properly secured and with adequate mooring weight the boats can weather
through very rough waters.

Graham

Jeff,
Are you going to leave her (yes, boats are she's) at anchor or on a mooring
ball? Don't believe at anchor is a good idea but a well maintained mooring
ball might work. You might be able to leave at anchor overnight but I would
not be comfortable with that. Does the marina have transient slips you could
use for overnights? - rob

Jeff,

Congratulations on your recent acquisition.

I'm not clear on the details of your plan, but it sounds like you might be
thinking of leaving your boat anchored for extended periods (i.e. hours)
while you are not on board. This is just my personal opinion, but this is
not a plan that I would be comfortable with. Your insurance company
probably wouldn't be too comfortable with this plan either.

If I've misinterpreted your intentions, please just ignore this.
