Just be aware of chafe & install chafe guards at wear points. This would also be an issue with 1/2? lines. 3/8? lines have some other advantages vs. 1/2? lines: 1. There is room on your cleats for two 3/8? lines ? i.e. bow line + spring line, doubled up lines, etc. 1/2? lines barely fit one per cleat. 2. The 3/8? lines have more stretch and thus less ?jerk? when you are tied up to a dock vs. 1/2? lines. 3. 3/8? lines with a loop will fit thru the center hole on the cleat and then loop back over the horns of the cleat while still leaving enough of the horns free to cleat off the line. This is very useful to run a line from the boat, around a piling on the dock, and then back to the boat. Then, you don?t need anyone on the dock when it comes time to cast off. You can?t do this with 1/2? lines. 4. 3/8? lines are less expensive Roger Pihlaja S/V Dynamic Equilibrium Sent from Mail for Windows From: Lee Kuhn Sent: Sunday, October 31, 2021 10:32 PM To: THOMAS POLISE; The Rhodes 22 Email List Subject: Re: [Rhodes22-list] Dock lines During one of our severe tidal surges on the Cheapeake, my boat was suspended above the water. All of your electrical devices (lights, radio, etc) should have a pair of wires with the positive side connecting to the panel and the negative side connecting to a negative bus bar, which is then connected to the negative side of the battery. This website has a nice, simple description of boat wiring basics. Scroll down and you can see how the system is built. https://newwiremarine.com/how-to/wiring-a-boat/ Stan is great at building boats, but he didn't usually follow marine best practices on electrical wiring so you're likely to find that your boat is not wired the same. There should be a screen shot attached. The page of the archives can accessed using http://www.rhodes22.org/pipermail/rhodes22-list/2021-October/thread.html The thread 'Furling headsail replacement' was started by Michael McKay on Oct 14 at 12:21 PM. You replied to Michael's post on Oct 14 at 3:23 PM. Then on Oct 23 at 8:27 AM, you replied to your own Oct 14 reply. Pipermail determination of threading seems appropriate, but in both of your replies you kept the subject unchanged, and you included the text of the message being replied to. So those posts don't do much to prove (or disprove) my theory that Pipermail uses neither subject nor message content in making decisions about threading. However, on Oct 31st, you sent a post with the subject 'End of summer', which Pipermail threaded as a response to your Oct 23 'Furling headsail replacement' post. Not only was the subject changed, but the Oct 31st post contained none of the content of the Oct 23rd post other than the picture attachment. Do you happen to recall how you created that email? > On 2021-11-04, at 07:28:20 EDT, ROGER PIHLAJA wrote: > > Peter, > > Speaking of the thread police, where did the work around experiment that I sent > to the list end up in the archives after Pipermail ?Sky Net? crunched it? > > Roger Pihlaja > S/V Dynamic Equilibrium > -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... OD tubing; but, Rig-Rite, Inc will sell you an entire traveler car assembly: www.RigRite.com (401) 739-1140 P/N: NF 529-1 The part number implies this is a Nicro-Fico traveler car. But, I don?t find it for sale at any other Nicro-Fico vender?s website. Have you tried cleaning and lubricating your present traveler car? My traveler car can be disassembled for cleaning. Another tip that will make the traveler car run free is to wash the traveler control lines on warm permanent press cycle, with Ivory soap and Downey fabric softener, and then tumble dry. The control lines should have a nice ?soft?, not stiff, feel to them. The jam cleats will also bite into them more effectively and be less likely to slip. So, I can?t measure the bore size on the sheaves on my traveler car. However, 7/32? ID would be an appropriate, slip fit, bore size for a 3/16? OD shaft. That sounds like kind of a small shaft size for the sort of loads the Rhodes 22 traveler car carries. However, it looks like you could drill it out to pretty much whatever you wanted, assuming you have a drill press. However, there is a bigger issue. The groove on this sheave was designed for 1/8? OD rope, not 1? OD tubing. That?s a pretty big mismatch. Unless you remachined the groove, I doubt this sheave would stay on the traveler bar under load. It certainly wouldn?t roll freely under load. I thought I had deleted all the original content and didn?t discover I had not deleted the attached picture until after I had sent the post. Are you saying Pipermail keyed off just the attached photo to determine where it was going to file this new post even though it had a different subject line and 99+% new content? Good grief! What are we dealing with here? Is there some sort of label in the background, not visible to the user; that, Pipermail assigns to a completely new thread? This invisible label then stays with that thread no matter how it is modified? Other types of lines, specifically double-braid, did not have enough stretch or elasticity for these applications. In reading posts on another forum (sorry), and doing a bit of research, I find that this firmly held opinion is quite incorrect. It seems there are double braided lines made specifically for anchor rodes and dock lines. There is also something sort of in between double-braided and 3-strand, called 8-plait, of which I was entirely unaware. One of the reasons this new information caught my attention is that both double-braid and 8-plaint are much more flexible than 3 strand, and will fall into an anchor rode locker (or bag) more easily. One of the short comings of my anchoring system, in which anchor rode is stored in bags in the aft corners of the lazaret, is that feeding the 3-strand rode down into the bags can sometimes be a somewhat fiddly process. A more flexible type of line would almost certainly improve things. For those unfamiliar with and curious about my anchor system, relevant YouTube videos can be found here: https://youtu.be/GheL7_fhpGo and here: https://youtu.be/VeL_3Ir0yQ4 Peter Nyberg Coventry, CT s/v Silverheels (1988/2016) From jesse.laten.shumaker at gmail.com Mon Nov 15 17:19:55 2021 From: jesse.laten.shumaker at gmail.com (Jesse Shumaker) Date: Mon, 15 Nov 2021 16:19:55 -0600 Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Learning New Things - Types of Line (Rope) In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Peter, thanks for sharing. I had not heard of 8-plait. Last fall I loosely copied your system to have an anchor rode stored in the lazarette that connects to an anchor on a bow roller. However, I only did this on the port side and my rode storage is a bit different. Anyway, I also found it to be a bit of a challenge to get the rode to feed into the bag easily. At the end of the season, I got a large snatch block which I can hang from the sturn pulpit (attached by a line), which I plan to use as a fairlead to make the rode feed in more vertically which I think will make it easier. I haven't tried it yet so we'll have to see how that works out next season. On the topic of anchoring, I've got a Fortress anchor mounted inside the lazarette for storage as a secondary anchor and a rode in a bucket that I can carry forward. I'm thinking about removing the Nicro fan from the forepeak and moving that to be on the port side of the mast, opposite the hatch that I installed on the starboard side, and then using the anchor tray to store the rode that had been in the bucket in the lazarette. Continuing (still!) on the topic of anchoring, I wanted to have a stern anchor mounted and ready to deploy with a rode already attached. As part of my fall projects, I used a PVC pipe mounted vertically, resting on the port side coaming near the stern and attached to the stern pulpit. Inside that I store a folding grapnel anchor with rode that is attached to the eye on the port side of the transom. The rode is looped and hung on the stern pulpit. I know the grapnel anchor doesn't offer significant holding power, but I figured it could be deployed in a hurry to slow the boat down in an emergency and could also be utilized as a lunch hook. While it's attached at the stern, I could walk it forward and tie it off on the bow cleat. I'll have to wait until next season to see how all this actually works in practice. When I write up a recap of my fall projects, I'll include some photos of the new setup. The procedure took about 1-1/2 hours on Monday afternoon. But, I was in the recovery room for several hours. I had some weird reactions to the nerve block. As I was coming out of it, I started uncontrollably shivering, bordering on convulsions at times. I wasn?t cold, just shaking from head to toe. It took 3 doses of IV Demerol to make it stop. Monday night, the nerve block caused my heart rate, BP, and blood oxygen to shoot up and down all over the map. I was hooked up to an EKG, auto BP cuff, and blood oxygen monitor all night, with nurses in constant attendance. Fortunately, by Tuesday morning, they had my cardiac issues stabilized. The nerve block also caused my bowels to stop working for a couple of days. But, I finally had a BM this afternoon. Dr. Ware, my orthopedist, stopped into my hospital room early Tuesday morning. He said the procedure went well and that the incision looked like it was healing nicely, with no leaking or signs of infection. My right knee area is swollen about 3 cm larger in circumference vs. the left knee. With great difficulty and a lot of pain, I can get the knee joint to bend to about 80 deg and straighten out to about 170 deg. I had 2 PT sessions in the hospital on Tuesday and another PT session in Beaverton today. All were very painful and exhausting! But, the therapists say I?m doing well. I have my next PT session in Beaverton on Thursday morning. I?m getting around pretty well in my walker and I?ve figured out how to get in and out of the Toyota minivan by myself. I don?t think I?ll be able to use our Subaru Legacy sedan for a while because the car is much lower and the doors are not as wide. Obviously, I won?t be able to drive for several weeks. I am on pain meds just prior to PT and to help me sleep. As long as I can keep the knee joint in a neutral position, the pain is not bad. But lifting the leg or loading it in any way is excruciating! At the moment, I have a hard time sitting in the car for over an hour. I am using my COLD machine to sleep and several hours each day. It helps with the swelling and pain. So far, it?s no fun; but, about what I expected. But, the therapists say I'm doing well. I have my next PT session in Beaverton on Thursday morning. I'm getting around pretty well in my walker and I've figured out how to get in and out of the Toyota minivan by myself. I don't think I'll be able to use our Subaru Legacy sedan for a while because the car is much lower and the doors are not as wide. Obviously, I won't be able to drive for several weeks. So far, it's no fun; but, about what I expected. The problem is one of getting the systems back to steady state conditions after perturbance. I'm glad that you are on the mend. Take the pain meds that will continue to slow your bowel functions, so that you may fully participate in the physical therapy. PT activity is the single most important predictor of future outcomes. That?s some potent shit they give you when they put you under! This was my 1st experience with a spinal nerve block. I guess everything is relative and I have no idea what this procedure would have been like without the nerve block. But, based on all the unpleasant, long lasting, side effects; I can?t say I?m a fan of nerve blocks. It flies and furls on it's own luff with a mini-furler on the foredeck and on a spare or extra halyard. The sail was perfect downwind for those days when the air was so light the genoa would collapse on itself. It was also good up to 7 or 8 knots (if I recall correctly) at a beam reach and could be sailed above a beam reach in light air. It was a bit of a hassle to rig but was great fun to sail. The attached photos are our former boat flying the UPS. The cruising spinnaker came with the boat when I bought S/V Dynamic Equilibrium back in 1987. It looks very similar to Mary Lou?s; but, I don?t have any details on the shape or construction, other than it?s nylon. I fly it from my spinnaker halyard. There is a tack downhaul, that I have rigged back to the cockpit. Finally, there is a wrap that goes around the furled genoa and attaches to the tack. This helps keep the tack of the sail near the forestay and enables the tack downhaul to put tension on the luff. In this configuration it?s a light air sail; but, almost as close winded as my 150% genoa. Downwind, I loosen the tack downhaul and slide the wrap up the forestay to belly the sail out. Then, I use my whisker pole to take the weight of the sail and the sheets off the clew. My whisker pole has a topping lift to support this weight. Because it?s a light air sail, I use 1/4? OD StaSet X sheets to keep the weight down. The mini-furler attached to a high tech line in the luff of the sail and a stainless u-bolt on the foredeck enough aft of the drum for the genoa furler and forward of the plate for the deck vent (or in our case the Nicro solar fan)? that they didn't interfere with each other. Ours was a single line furler but IIRC, Doyle went to a continuous line furler the next year - that would have been nice. The UPS had its own halyard and I think we moved the topping lift to a block attached to the masthead plate to free up a sheave in the masthead for it. The UPS came with its own lightweight sheets that just stayed attached to the sail. We just removed the regular genoa sheets from the blocks on the the genoa track and looped them around the very handy handholds on either side of the companionway. Our genoa track ran all the way to the winches and was adequate. While we talked about tying? blocks to the aft cleats to get a slightly better angle and maybe point a little higher, we never did. With this set up, we could furl the UPS and switch to the genoa fairly easily. If we had a building breeze we would drop the UPS on its furler, leave it attached at the u-bolt? and stash it below or in its bag against the mast. It didn't furl tightly enough to stay aloft but furled in a breeze. Doyle was incredibly helpful in walking us through the process. The sail came with the furler and sheets attached. All we needed to do was install the u-bolt in the deck and free up the halyard. It was a great sail for light air, very forgiving and a lot of fun to play with. So, I downsized to a 135%, but being concerned about light air performance, I also bought a UPS (both sails from Doyle - Salem loft). I knew about the UPS (Utility Power Sail) from discussions on the list back in 2003 - 2004. The sail was not mentioned on the Doyle website, but the salesman (Chris Howes) assured me that they could still make me one. I was pretty surprised when I got it, because the 2019 version of the UPS was quite a bit different than 2004 version. The 2004 UPS was made from nylon. As Mary Lou's pictures show, nylon comes in colors, and back then you could pick the colors you wanted. I'm not sure what fabric was used in the construction of my UPS, but while pretty light, I'm sure it's heavier than the nylon fabric, and it only comes in white. As for rigging, the IMF mast can accommodate two 'halyards'. When I got my boat, one 'slot' was being used for the mainsail boom topping lift, and the other was unused. So, now the second 'slot' has the halyard for the UPS. For the tack, there's an eye on deck just aft of the head stay, a small block attached to the eye, and a line (tack-line) runs through the block. Both the halyard and tack-line are 1/4". When the UPS is not deployed, the working ends of these lines are clipped to the deck just forward of the mast (where they can be reached while standing in the cabin). The other ends go to cam cleats at the aft end of the cabin roof. Note that there is no furler in this set-up. To deploy the UPS, I put the sail bag down on the cabin floor and pull out the head and tack corners, and attach halyard and tack-line. Pull some on one, then some on the other until the luff is tight (being careful not to let the ends of the sheets get away from you). In very light air, I do sometimes have to go on deck to coax the head past the spreader. The UPS has its own set of sheets (3/8"). Often, only one will end up being used, but two are needed. I'm pretty sure that I've never tacked the UPS, but I've jibed it plenty of times. There's one more line that helps when retrieving the UPS. It is permanently attached to the tack, and when the sail is deployed it runs back to the cabin. Trying to pull in the tack using the clew and foot will tend to make the sail fill with air, which is not what you want at this point. Pulling the tack in with this line while leaving the sheets slack works much better (as I found out the hard way). Naturally, I've got a YouTube video that discusses and depicts some of this, which can be found here: https://youtu.be/8Jcl55uFkbA Peter Nyberg Coventry, CT s/v Silverheels (1988/2016) From mweisner at ebsmed.com Sun Nov 21 00:24:44 2021 From: mweisner at ebsmed.com (Michael D.
