Jeff,

There was a long thread (~50 posts) on this topic about a year ago.  You should be able to find it if you go to the archives for September 2020, list by thread, and look for the thread with the subject "Converting Electric Winch Motor Lift to a Manual System". Bottom line is that it can be done, and has been done by a few people, including me.  The winch to manual lift conversion doesn't apparently work quite as well as the system that Stan designed as a manual lift from get-go, but it works well enough, and I've never considered going back.
