[Rhodes22-list] Washing cockpit cussions

I've had Raven for over 10 years and I wash them every spring.Fortunately they are white so it makes things easy. I just throwthem into a garbage pale with water and bleack for an hr or so.Then I take them out of there and throw them in the washingmachine. Hang them to dry. Haven't had any problems with doingthat whatsoever......

Ours were a bright blue and I'm not sure we ever had the covers off -
mostly just rinsed them when needed. I vaguely remember and incident
with a glass of red wine that required removing a cover. I don't recall
any difficulty getting it back on. They don't stretch of shrink.

My cushions are a mesh over closed cell foam which was stained in places. I
used Fantastic with bleach and scrubbed them with a deck brush., allowed to
sit for half an hour and then rinsed with a garden hose. Stains gone and no
harm to cushions.

Jeff,
How did you find those parts on Dwyer's web site?  I looked and I can find any of those listed.

The always helpful Peter Nyberg has an excellent either video or post about ordering beefed up gooseneck parts from Dwyer Masts. I installed them last Fall and what a difference. Here is my order:
DH 3143  - U-Bracket
2 Ordered @    $7.42/ea
Item Total - $14.84

CR1      - Rigging ring, 3/4"
2 Ordered @    $0.50/ea
Item Total - $1.00

CLP-4-0.984      - Clevis Pin
2 Ordered @    $2.72/ea
Item Total - $5.44

DH 334  - Heavy Duty Universal
1 Ordered @    $14.42/ea
Item Total - $14.42
The clevis pins were mislabeled in their catalog and proved to be 1/8"
short.  Dwyer promptly sent the correct length.

I've washed my cockpit cushions with various cleansers but the best cleaning resulted from letting them float in my chlorinated swimming pool for a day or two. Flip them over once in a while. Use them as floats while in the pool.

If they are the original cockpit cushions they are most likely Phifertex over closed cell foam. The cushions should be zippered so you can get the covers off.

You could try mild soap and water and a soft scrub brush. If that doesn't work, I seem to remember Rose Spitzer cleaning cushion covers with a bleach mixture and a garden hose.

I found a couple of items with a Google search that might help.

Don't leave any cleaner on the vinyl meash for a long period of time and try not to use any petroleum product. You don't want to soften the vinyl.

Best of luck,
Mary Lou

Here is Carson of Dwyer Masts when I sent him a pick of my twisted
gooseneck.

Oh Man, that's pretty buggered up. You'll need to U Brackets. What are the
bolt sizes going into mast and boom? You'll also need a gooseneck universal
DH316. Two ring dings, like CR2 and Two clevis pins CLP-4-111.

Thank you for your interest in Dwyer Mast and Rigging.

Rob,

Here's how to find the gooseneck parts I used for my repair:

1) go to www.dwyermast.com

2) click on 'Boom Extrusions and Fittings'

3) click on 'DM-275 Boom'

4) click on the image for 'DH 355-FHD Heavy Duty Fixed Gooseneck'

5) You should get a pop-up window with an exploded parts diagram with a parts list below it.  You may need to resize the window to see everything. You can use this window to create an order by filling in quantities.

The parts I used were:

    DH 3143 - U Bracket (2)
    CLP-4-111 - Clevis Pin (2)
    DH 334 - Heavy Duty Universal (1)

Other parts I sourced from McMaster-Carr.

These parts are more heavy duty than the ones that came with my boat.

All this and more is also in my video: https://youtu.be/z_pg6PVEZqI

Thank for the info.  I wonder why they don't list them on the goosenecks page?

Guess it shows you need to contact the company directly for help sometimes.

Hi All,
Had rudder repaired but did not measure rudder hole. Repair covered the original hole, but I do have location of original hole. Does anyone have the size of the rudder hole on a centerboard?

Thanks,

Are you talking about your rudder or centerboard?  I am confused about:

Chy:

Are you referring to the hole for the pivot pin or the hole for the line? The hole for the pivot pin is determined by the pin - it should be very snug - while the hole for the line is just sufficient for the the line you are usng. I think some ket bit of information is missing. Perhaps a photo would help.

For those with the conventional rig, you might be interested in the arrangements of sail bag and lazy jacks that I installed on my 76 Rhodes.

While this arrangement will not likely help you win races, it has turned out to be a very convenient way to raise, lower and store the mainsail. I have attached a picture.

The sail just drops into the bag when lowered and the cover zips up easily. I no longer have to struggle with sail management. It has many, not all,  of the benefits of the IMF with none of the complications or cost.

Unfortunately, there are also 2 holes in the centerboard.  There is a hole which is a snug fit with a 1/2? OD shoulder bolt which is what the centerboard pivots on.  Then, there is another hole near the trailing edge of the centerboard for the pennant.  On my boat, this hole is 3/8? ID.

Hi Graham,

Interesting windows on your dog house.  I?ve never seen a Rhodes 22 that didn?t have 3 separate ports.

My friend with the 42 ft LOA catamaran has a conventional mainsail with lazy jacks.  They work OK; but, you have to watch that the battens don?t get fouled going up or down.  I sailed the same boat before we installed the lazy jacks and that huge mainsail was a real bear to handle! The self flaking and self storing features of the lazy jacks are nice.  It helps if the helmsman can keep the boat pointed right into the eye of the wind.  The extra work associated with rigging/unrigging the lazy jacks is also a bit of a PITA.  My friend leaves his boat in the water all spring, summer, and fall.  In the winter, the mast stay up; but, the sails, boom, and lazy jacks all come down.  We?ve got rigging/unrigging it down to a system; but, it probably adds an extra 45 minutes each time.  Often, my Boy Scout Troop helps and they love it!

Do you trailer your Rhodes 22 much?

Chuy, and others,

The pivot pin hole as others have said should be a snug fit. It must be
pulled and measured as it has changed over the years. Earlier boats made in
the late 1970's like Roger's boat, and my first two Rhodes 22s had a half
inch diameter pin or bolt.
Newer boats had a much larger diameter pin. I have never measured the pin
in my present boat (a 1984) but it's much larger...closer to an inch or
more.
There is at least one Rhodie that should know because he machined a new one
on his machinists lathe, but I can't remember who or when.

You'll have to remove the center board, repair the holes if necessary sized
to any new pin you make.
I can search my picture files tonight to see if I can find that picture and
see if the date it was created is in the file's properties. At least that
will give a good starting date for searching the archives.

There are numerous posts in the Archives. It appears that the earlier Rhodes had a 1/2" pivot pin. The later Rhodes use a 1" stainless steel pin. See photo. Respite is a 1989/2005 and has a 1" pivot pin. There are good instructions on CB removal and repair.

For those of you new to The List, there is an official Rhodes 22 fleet
burgee (see Community news for ordering information). For further
information, contact Cindy. She has burgees in inventory.
