Fighting a 35 knot headwind in heavy Chesapeake chop I could only go 3.5 knots and the propeller rose out of the water between each wave. Replaced it with a 6 Tohatsu that drove the boat over 5 knots in relatively calm water at 3/4 throttle. Advantage was that I could remove the 59 pound motor (barely) by myself. 8 hp long shaft seems most popular. So while the 8 was adequate, I tried a friend?s boat with a 9.9 Yamaha and felt the difference both in power and an extra long shaft. I worked with Elton to switch it and haven?t regretted it since. We go out occasionally in the ocean and really need the 9.9, but our predictably high winds create 3+ foot rollers the same in the bay. As long as you can keep the prop in the water, 8 hp has always been enough. The trouble is, if you have run aground, what are the waves doing? Are breaking waves going to uncover your prop, causing it to cavitate? I can?t speak to being able to pull off after running aground, as I haven?t done that. I would think the difference in reverse thrust between 8 hp and 9 hp would be minimal. You will be able to generate more pulling power by using an anchor and one of your primary winches to ?kedge? off. If you are well and truly stuck, it?s going to take a big power boat to pull you off. Look at the engines on the commercial tow boats. Often, they come with twin 250?s with thrust props. That?s probably a factor of >100X the force either an 8 or 9 hp outboard, or an anchor kedge is going to provide. Roger Pihlaja S/V Dynamic Equilibrium 1978. S/V Mary Bess (named for my mother, at my daughter?s suggestion) is a 1985 Rhodes, refurbished in 2001 according to what the previous owner told me. I have owned her since 2015. I put new sails on her in 2021 (Sobstad) and in 2022 switched from a gasoline outboard to a Torqeedo electric motor, which works great on the lake where we sail. The trailer has new tires (including spare) and the wiring was recently refurbished. I am asking $9500. I?ll attach a PDF ad with a photo (hope it comes through). The canvas hatch, window, and Bimini covers do not appear in the photo. I'm planning on lifting and jacking my rhodes up on blocks and boat jacks. Boatyard style. This is my first time taking a boat as big as the rhodes off its trailer and doing this. We're planning some major trailer service and thats whats bringing this about. Its illegal in my state to moor or anchor overnight and the few places that rent legal moorings are extremely sought after, so, jacking is our option. I can lift the boat off the trailer but for placement on the ground i was thinking to block under the keel and use short boat stands front and rear, then much taller stands all around to keep the boat upright. Is this plan correct? Anyone have tips? Would very much love to hear thank you! I have used a number of ways to lift the bow so the trailer can be pulled out and replaced. This year (would have been the 4th season on the bottom paint) I used a friends fork- lift- it worked great. In the past I have used a gantry that I built out or 5/4 x 6 & plywood with a 4 x 8 pressure treated girder across the top and a 3 ton come-a-long. I built the parts, put it together lying on the ground, then pulled it up with a line while standing on the bow after staking the bottom to the ground so it would not slide. If you afraid of heights - this method is not for you. I worked this all single handed and it wasn?t tooo difficult, but my aging back is making it impossible to do that these days, especially by myself.. The fork lift was much easier. . . When I used the gantry, I left it in place. My friend had to take his toy away so I didn?t have the fork-lift for back up. I use the bow ring to lift the bow, but I had recently rebelt the baking so I knew it was very strong - always know what is behind the thing you are fighting from. Anyway, 3 jacks initially, two in the stern and one just forward of the keel- so there is nothing in the way of the trailer wheels. Then (this is not shown) add one jack on each side, about midship, for stability, for a total of 5 jacks while you are working on the boat. The two amidship can be moved fore and aft while you are sanding and painting. The two in the stern and one forward of the keel, are left in place and those three spots are sanded and painted once the boat is back on the trailer. Always, be extra safe and careful. I had the boat fall off the jacks once when I was jacking it with a hydraulic jack and a 4 x 4 without the Gantry or Fork lift. It scared the shit out of me, so now I?m always super careful and take my time for every action when I?m moving the boat. Fortunately, I didn?t get hurt and neither did Dadventure. Good luck in your adventure. Using these two jacks + the tongue jack will enable you to change a flat. It also enables us to level the boat for use as a travel trailer. We get the oddest looks in RV parks! But, for your purpose it also enables the boat/trailer to be lifted, boat supported on jack stands, and then the trailer lowered out of the way for bottom painting or other maintenance. You will need a dozen or so 4?x6?x24? wooden blocks to use as cribbing. I will give you some precautions: 1. Always chain the jack stands together so they don?t slide outboard port and starboard. 2. If you are working on any surface but concrete, put a sheet of plywood under the jack stands so they don?t sink. 3. Don?t locate the jack stand support pads on the hull any closer than 10? away from any thru hull fittings. Good Luck! Roger Pihlaja S/V Dynamic Equilibrium 1978. The trailer jacks sound like a brilliant idea. But this too is not for the old and or frail. I plan to build a new swivel lift at my house with a hydraulic arm. To use it I will lower the bow as far as possible, (with a car jack) then use two jack stands (with chain ties) at the stern. Then jack up the front of the trailer with the car jack. Then I will simply swing the arm into place over the bow, attache my hoist strapping and lift the bow until I can pull the trailer out. Then I can use my other three jack stands to stabilize the boat. When it?s done, I?ll share photos. I decided that I preferred to raise the outboard manually, and so removed the winch years ago. I kept the winch 'just in case', and you are welcome to it. The winch was working fine at the time that I removed it. There are wires and the switch in the box it's being stored in. The webbing strap is still in place on the winch. As I recall, on my boat the center 'rail' of the outboard lift had to be partially removed to gain access to the bolts holding the winch in place. One of the bolts holding the rail in place is definitely below the water line. Just unwind the ends, loosen one cleat and pull on the other end to move it back and forth. re-cleat both ends when positioned how you want it. One cleat will always have tension. Both ends of the bar should be pinned to the cups on the backstays. I don't see any pins in yours. Both my cleats face upwards so I can see them I suppose. Yours were apparently wound up nicely at both ends but that is not typical, probably your previous owner didn't move the traveller much. I just leave the ends of mine hanging. It wasn't dramatic, and I was able to muddle through and continue the cruise. When I got back home, I investigated, found the cause, ordered some parts, and fixed the problem. (I'm pretty sure.) Then I made a video about it: https://youtu.be/GfcqzaJktb8 Long story short, the bearing at the bottom of the whole assembly deteriorated (old age), which allowed a small but important piece to fall off, which allowed the stainless 'cup' at the bottom to rotate with the rest of the furler, which is not good. I ordered some new parts from CDI (https://www.cdifurlers.com). To the extent I've been able to test it, with the boat on its trailer in my yard, the furler seems to be working better than ever. If you'd like your CDI furler to spin more easily, you might want to consider upgrading to the better bearing even if it's not yet broken. My table is supported on each end by shelves that protrude from the companionway step and the folding step in the head compartment. The table is unsupported over its length between these 2 shelves. I?ve never had an issue with overloading. But, I suppose a heavy weight previous owner might have installed the posts to support the load. I don?t think this is factory standard.
