Hello Rhodies
Reality has won the day. Once upon a time I decided that I wanted to sail.
After some research I concluded that the Rhodes 22 was the sailboat I
needed. I contacted Mr. Spitzer and learned that Annapolis was the
furthest north he traveled to boat shows. So, in October of 2013, off we
went to Annapolis and we ended up buying a beautiful blue refurbished 2007
model for $35,000. Funny aside, we did not have enough money for the down
payment, so Stan “loaned” me the difference. (Loved that man)
I bought a brand-new single axle Triad trailer to go along with the boat
($5,000) and Stan stored both for the winter. The following Spring I
picked up the boat in Edenton and brought it to Nortons Marina in East
Greenwich RI on the Narragansett Bay. My wife and I sailed for three
seasons and when I say sail, I mean attempted to sail ! I think we may
have sailed a total of 25 times. (my wife has corrected me and said she
would be surprised if it were more than 15 times) Since then, the boat has
been in storage because I really, really liked the idea of being a sailor
and we figured we would get back to it. I enjoyed being part of the
Rhodes community and Stan’s unique personality captivated me. As a result,
I bought almost every option he could come up with. Fiberglass tiller –
check, Bimini top – check, pop top enclosure – check, Mast Hoist system –
check, New adjustable traveler – check, 130 Genoa (never used)-check – I
even have the new furling genoa system that I never installed! The trailer
has only been used for storage and other than the first dip in the
Albemarle when I picked up the boat, has never been in the water. I am
guessing it has about 1,500 miles on it including the 650 mile home trip
from Edenton.
I have come to the conclusion that we are not going to ever use this
beautiful little boat again. And so, it just sits mocking me every time I
walk by. Selling the boat will be my second Rhodes heartbreak – first
being Stan’s passing. But this boat needs to be sailed, and I thought I
would throw it out to the Rhodies first to gauge interest. As soon as the
weather permits I will wash off the dust and I’ll test run the little
Tohatsu 6hp sailpro motor to make sure it runs. I also have the tiller –
motor steering gizmo.
Please feel free to email me directly at MRBABINS at GMAIL.COM if you have
any questions and at some point I’ll take some photos.
I was thinking it’s worth all of $16,000, unless someone wants to pay more
😊 The boat is in Massachusetts.
Thanks
