[Rhodes22-list] Racing: Jib vs. Genoa

Hi Bob,

When my sons were younger, we used to race PHRF in Saginaw Bay.  The PHRF ratings for the stock Rhodes 22 range from ~250 - 312 sec/nm, depending on how the boat is rigged.  The boat needs the big genoa in order to balance the helm as it heels over.   So, sailing with a jib vs the Genoa should bump your rating up near the top of the range, assuming the race committee with consider your plea. The fact that nearly all Rhodes 22’s came with a 150% or 175% Genoa will make your case a tough sell.  The IMF mainsail should increase your rating, ( ie more sec/nm ) a diamond board vs the older high aspect ratio centerboard should increase your rating.  My boat has a Harken unit 0 roller furler, a 150% biradial composite sailcloth Genoa, a very roach fully battened mainsail, and the high aspect centerboard. With all this go fast stuff, in the last year we competed, we were assigned a rating of 238 sec/nm.  In moderate air of 10-20 knots, we could sail to that rating and did well.
