Rik,
We nicknamed this race the "720".
It was a nice 6-7k wind with NO waves (great for us).
We were off to a great start when one of thos big motor
cruisers came by and its waves literally stopped us on a
dime. These darn race boats are just too light to puch through
'em! This caused the 37.5 behind us to hit our stern...man
we looked back to see why we had stopped and here comes
a large anchor! We pushed him off and took our two 360's
penalty (hence 720)!
Nevertheless we pointed much better to the mark and rounded it
second. Flew the spinnaker and took over the Meritt 25 with mylar
headsail. Stayed in the lead of 35.5, 40's et al. The Meritt nearly
caught us at the end but we got a nice lift. Wind was very shifty.
We had another race we called the 360 reverse when there was
positively NO wind and we drifted into the mark and had to take
a 360 penalty but we had so little control that we did it backwards.
Then there was the govenors cup that we call the "broacher"with
26 mph wind when we broached! Recovered beautifully and reset
the spinnaker in only a few minutes. Meanwhile the J80 also broached
but they got their spinnaker under the centerboard and had to pull it
up over the stern. They never reset. Actually, that guy is a very good
sailor but he had pretty rookie crew.
All in all it was a very exciting and fun race season. We have the 50 miler
in two weeks but it is not a club series, rather an invitational.
Mostly I am pleased for John, for he and Lisa do so much volunteer work
for our club over the past 10 years and have never taken first.
I will pass on your message.
Anne
