<I see that some guy has just finished a trip, San Francisco to Hilo,
Hawaii in August in his WW Potter 19.>

I know nothing of this trip BUT the early passages which made the
Potters present reputation were accomplished in a very highly modified
boat. Check out the Potter net groups and you will be surprised at just
how different the famous boat was from what is made today. There is a
brand new Potter in my marina. For costal sailing it's ok but, I for
one would not trust my life to it.

<Some of us seem to set pretty low limits for ourselves.>

In my case it's a matter of the weight (my perception) of a captains
responsibility. I generally have my wife and frequently my children
onboard. On these occasions the cloak of "command" and ethical
answerability hangs heavily on me and I become extraordinarily
cautious.

A couple of weeks ago Roger posted a fascinating story describing a
spinnaker run under very difficult conditions. It reminded me of a
similar passage I made (20 years ago) in a 19 foot Albin one design
swing keel boat which was my first serious monohull vessel. We flew for
40 miles. Looking back at it and considering what might have happened I
am positive I would not try it today. Is this the wisdom of experience
or just fear. I don't know.

In the early days of sail/steam cross Atlantic service the Cunard Line
instructed their captains that one thing mattered above all else. To
deliver their vessel and passengers safely. By paying no heed to that
rule Captain Smith cooked the White Star Line. After more then two
decades of sailing.dodging water spouts and a few other spectaular
eventualities I (at last) try to live up to Cunards principal.

Richard Smith
