[Rhodes22-list] Sails!

Wally,
Lake Hartwell is called a lake, but it's not very wide in the area where we
sail. I have the 175 as you know and others have purchased the 175 upon my
recommendation and I haven't been stoned....yet. The trick to running in
heavier air with the 175 is to furl it and bring the sheets inside the
outer shrouds. I have a track that runs alongside the cabin and a car which
I can feed the sheet through and get the proper downward tension for better
sail shape.
As others have stated before, the first reef should be to lower the pop top
and the boom. It works wonders and often will make furling the genny
unnecessary.
Capt. Bob Keller (Yankee Clipper) just returned from a trip down Florida
way where they had some strong winds on the ocean. He said instead of
furling the genny, he simply lowered the boom and went along without
getting knocked down or struggling. He was surprised the difference it
made. I think that sometimes we get spoiled with the convenience of having
the pop top up. It makes for easy use of the cabin. In the future, lowering
the top and the boom will always be my first reef. It might even work well
for racers.
