Since my headstay broke at the fitting, I did not have to drill out the 
bushings on the furler.  But a new headstay can be made by putting the
wire 
through the furler before attaching the fitting.  That would be best.
The 
second (or maybe third) problem I had was that the new fitting was
slightly 
smaller than the old one, so the drum slid right down to the bottom,
just as 
you stated.  Rummy to the rescue-he manufactured a plastic fitting that
goes 
on the wire between the furler and fitting that keeps the furler up
where it 
is supposed to stay.  It is really a plastic bushing that screws
together 
around the wire and it works perfectly.  I think he is making and
selling 
these for some price ($50? - which includes his designing and
engineering 
work)...
