MJM,

There was a very telling photo in the USA Today last
week of the Korean Penusula from a satellite at night,
showing South Korea completely lit up and North Korea
mostly dark. Let's see, there's N. Korea, Cuba, a
couple of African countries, that's about it for
nations that are still trying to run their economies
on communist economic theories. I found myself in
agreement with Bill Clinton (Lord take me now) last
week when he said the North Koreans want economic aid
and this is their cry for attention. They need food
and power. The problem is, if we cave in, every two
bit nation in the world will act the same. If the
only threat from N. Korea is their nuclear reactor, we
simply do like Israel did with Saddam, take it out.
My gut feeling is that the US is not that concerned
about Korea yet because the time line is not as
critical as Iraq. Plus, China has a huge stake in
this because of their geography and customer base.
You're right about nukes in Japan. I don't trust them
with weapons and the Chinese sure as hell don't. Until
I can walk into any restaurant in Tokyo that I choose
and get a table, they don't deserve even a firecracker
(I've been refused admission to eat three times in
Japan because I was an American). Makes me want to
trade my Lexus for a Renault, NOT!
