[Rhodes22-list] Small temporary replacement motor

Thanks. This is great information and advice, especially as to your
experience with the motor tiller and with maneuvering while still looking
forward.

As to using a replacement motor other than for this one time or during
future maintenance or repairs, I have never tried to remove the heavy 9.9 by
myself to make room for a replacement motor. (I have managed to get far less
difficult things onto the bottom of the lake (20 to 35 feet down at the
dock), including my cell phone, my prescription sunglasses, my hat, and
Stan's entire steering linkage)--a marina worker took the 9.9 off for
repairs--so once it gets back on I might never be able to get the 2 hp on
there again and it would gum up and be hard to ever start again. I still
like the idea of having a small one for emergencies, though, or to buy a
small tender and use it on a different, nearby constant-level lake too
narrow for sailing.

Your experience with the 5 hp, as well the experience of other owners with
similar sized engines, prompts me to consider switching principal engines
someday if I have any more problems with my existing motor. Actually, prior
to the November mishap which, as Roger says, was probably the result of my
own procedures, it had been a reliable engine, even though too heavy and
overpowered for the needs of most of us. At its slowest setting it is
always moving the boat too fast when you want to go as slow as possible.
Others on the list reported starting problems. Mine starts easily unless I
forget to use gas preservative--even then and at worst, I can start it
within five to seven short presses of the on button, the right pauses and
juicing of the throttle, and the right incantations to the gods. With gas
preservative, this year it starts in two to three short cranks. Last year,
its first year, it started in one to two short cranks. All this seems
acceptable, and some internal gumming up is to be expected with sometimes
infrequent motor use.

David, My moter is not linked 5 hp 2 stroke. With the 6-1 lift there is
room for the moter tiller to clear the transom with out having to be folded
(most engine tiller handles fold up to vertical) except for when it is
pointed directly amidships. this is a perfect arrangement since I can wedge

the handle to the transom amidships and steer with the tiller when not in
tight spaces. Innitially I found the moter lift to get in the way of the
o/b controlles when I bought the boat and had a couple of bad dockings and
almost drove on to the rocks while turned backwards searching for the gear
shifter. I forced myself the and my arms to memorize where the gear shifter

is without looking. I sit facing forward w/ the tiller in my right hand and

my left hand over the transome working the motor. In tight spaces I can do
donuts in my own boat leanth - Hell I could almost park in Anne's slip while

a boat is being launched. I recommend getting the 2 hp motor for
emergancies. Maby you could even get a couple of other guy at the marina to
chip in as co owners. Good luck
Bob Weber
