Stan,

Don't discount the Chinese market. There is a lot of
excess RNB floating around China from the new
capitalists. I've attached an article on the China
yacht market for your consumption.

Demand Rising on China's Yacht Market

China's yacht market demand is rising, thanks to the
continuous upgrading of China's economic development
level and the rapid development of tourism industry.
However, domestic yacht development and production
fall far short of demand.

China is a lake and river-studded country, with
numerous water tourist resorts available for the
development of water tourism. Water recreational
facilities have become a favourite with Chinese
tourists over the past few years. The construction of
water recreational facilities is therefore a focal
point for tourism investment in all localities.

It is understood that the top ten national tourism
development zones will invest tens of billions of
Renminbi in the development and renovation of tourism
facilities, of which, 30% will be earmarked for water
sport recreation and tourism projects. Last year
Beijing opened several water tour routes in the urban
areas and with RMB500,000-600,000 yachts put into
service. Each generated more than RMB10,000 revenue
per day. Another 40 yachts will be put into service
along water tour routes in peripheral areas this year.
Tianjin plans to build an international yacht club,
which will cover an area of more than 200,000 square
metres. The first phase will cost RMB30 million. The
yacht club will have international standard yacht
berths, storehouse and auxiliary facilities. Other
cities including Huzhou and Hangzhou of Zhejiang
Province, Wuhan of Hubei, and Shanghai, also plan to
build large water facilities, sightseeing yachts for
purchase, renovate existing sightseeing ships and set
up yacht clubs.

The yacht is a kind of technology, fund and labour
intensive product integrating culture and art. Whilst
well established throughout the world, the yacht
manufacturing industry, as a result of excessive
labour costs is losing its edge in Europe, America,
Japan and South Korea. This must therefore be an
appropriate time for international yacht makers to
enter the Chinese market. At present, because of low
levels of production and technology, China has to
import yachts to meet the rising demand, but at the
same time it also provides a market for which domestic
shipbuilding enterprises can compete.

Although China has nearly 200 shipbuilders, and 600
research institutes and auxiliary equipment
manufacturers, it still imports more than 20,000
outboard motors annually. It is essential that the
majority of small-scale domestic shipbuilders
introduce advanced technology and equipment to upgrade
the quality and standard of their ships. China has so
far developed hydrofoil boats, hovercraft and
ground-effect boat, whose stability, safety, interior
decoration and noise-control need further improvement.
High-tech boats such as submarine tour boat remain to
be developed.

In the light of the booming yacht market, a group of
inland enterprises in Shanghai and other places have
undertaken a feasibility study of yacht-building and
have started to seek co-operation with noted foreign
yacht builders in the production of luxury tour boats
and related outboard motors. The Red Double Happiness
(Group) Co., Ltd., the noted sport apparatus producer
in China, has built a luxury reinforced glass fibre
tour boat production base in Songjiang, Shanghai in
co-operation with foreign investors.
