[ham] FW: [rhodes22-list] Jack Lines

I did some single handed sailing last month on SF Bay on a Santana 22 (nice
boat). Because the wind was blowing hard, and I'd never been on the boat
before, I asked for jacklines and a harness. My first experience with them.

What was interesting, and would be reasonably inexpensive was that the
company I chartered the boat from, merely cleated off the webbing straps to
through bolted bow and stern horn cleats, just about identical to the
standard cleats on the Rhodes. Seemed safe and easy, though fortunately I
never had to put it to the acid test.

their are a four bolt ones with matching backing plate, IRC Shaffer's from
west, 38$+-, could lift the boat with them, I bolted and
nutted them, should replace the nuts with barrel nuts for a cleaner look.

I have a thought might even do it my self in the fall, make up a 12+- foot
set of tethers with calibers on the ends(but watch out
they can not open from anouther caliber sliding over), they would go from
the cabine top padeyes to the bow cleat, use it as a quick
setting jackline, the hook the stanard 6 footer tethers on to it instead of
the padeye itself.

1)same as the pad eye, keeps you in the cockpit,
2)going forward is now no problem and eveything should be short enought to
keep you out of the prop :-)
3)if you get "caught" can still hook up to the 12 footer to the padeye and
your self to go forward(watch the prop with this one :-),
and still have the option of quick connects to the padeye and the rear
cleat.

BTW do not use the stays, you rip them right out with the side load when you
need them most :-)

Yeah, I never thought about using any other methods...your hardpoints are
through-bolted eyelets, sufficiently stout?? Maybe going forward would
entail appropriately time connetion to a stay.

I have a subjection, I have jack line for the boat but I rally use them,
found it easier to install two hardpoint on the cabin top, either side of
the hatch, backing plates inside the cabin, the area is solid/think their
for block mounting, I use inflatable life vest with harness and double ended
tethers, in the case where I need it I connect one end to the cabin top and
the other to a rear cleat, keeps me in the cockpit no matter what and by
dropping an in permits me to go forward or aft. the only down side verse
full jackline is reaching the forestay.

Michelle and I experienced our first minor off-shore storm last June. It
came up quickly, though we were on the look out. I think that it's time for
jack lines...do you guys have any rigged and if so, how? Thanks in advance,
Al/Michelle S/V Mishka
