[Rhodes22-list] Leaks

On my boat the sink drain thru hull is molded into the hull, not a seprate
part.

If yours is the same as mine, I would suggest waiting for a dry calm day,
and trying to pack some MarineTex, or Life Caulk on the fitting on the
inside of the hull. Hopefully, it'll dig into the crack that must have
developed and stop the leak.

If yours is indeed a separate thru hull fitting, you can definitely do the
fix yourself. It is pretty much as you describe the procedure.

Since the fitting is above the water line, you can use 3m 4200, or any other
caulking approved for above the water line. I'm pretty sure there is a fast
cure 4200. Here's the play by play, in exdcruciating detail.

1. Unthread the nut from the back of the fitting.

2. Remove the thru hull. This may be tough if some of the old bedding is
still holding. You may want to carefully use a putty knife to separate the
thru hull from the caulking.

3. Clean off the any old caulk from both the fitting, nut, and inside and
out side of the hull. This may be also tough also depending on what kind of
caulk was originally used.

4. Clean all surfaces with acetone.

5. Put a fairly heavy bead of caulk around the flange of the thru hull, and
put it in place.

6. Put another fairly heavy bead of caulk on the surface of the nut that
will be in contact with the inside of the hull, and screw it back on the
thru hull. Hand tighten it down, but not so much as to squeeze all of the
caulk out from between the nut, thru hull, and both side of the hull.

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Leaks

I just got back from the boat and saw that the thru hull from the sink drain
is leaking. I cut off the shabby end of the hose and reclamped it only to
find that it is leaking right at the hull where the thru-hull fitting goes
thru. Is the remedy for this to remove the thru-hull (it is above the
waterline); lay down a bedding/caulking substance and then reinstall the
thru-hull fitting? Then does it need to be caulked? Is this something I
can reasonably tackly on my own? What products are best to use?

Thanks,
Saroj
