[Rhodes22-list] Is Yankee Clipper fixed?

Ed,
Yes, the forestay is fixed, but it wasn't easy.

Rummy and I worked on it for about four hours on a Friday night and got it
installed before we noticed a slight problem. Before I get into that, the
installation was made more difficult because I did not send the lower furler
drum to West Marine Rigging when I ordered the new forestay. Why not? Just
didn't catch that small detail. If you notice on the GB furler, the wire
goes through the drum and then the aircraft fitting is attached. I had the
new forestay with the fitting already attached, and there was no way to get
the wire through the drum! We considered drilling the hole in the drum much
larger, but thank goodness we didn't do that. So, instead, we used my handy
tree saw to cut the drum from the outside all the way to the center hole.
Then we could, with great difficulty, bend the drum and force the wire
through the cut into the center hole. Not easy nor is it the desired
method, but it worked, or so we thought...

When we installed the new forestay into the furling tube, we found a rope
inside the tube, the entire length of the tube with some plastic ties
attached. This is in place to reduce the noise of the stay against the
tube. Anyone else ever seen this? Made reinstalling the stay a royal pain,
so I hope it was worth it.

After we raised the mast and Rummy left, I went back down to the boat and
thought I would try out the new genoa sheets and see how the furler worked
with the new forestay. To my horror, it didn't work. The new aircraft
fitting from West Marine was just slightly smaller than the old one so that
the drum went all the way down to where the fitting attached to the deck.
Since it was lower, the furling line did not wrap on the drum, but above the
drum. In addition, the sail was too low on the deck. Next morning, Rummy
called and awoke me with the solution (even before I had told him there was
a problem). He constructed a (polycarbonate?) square bushing that fastened
around the forestay at the fitting that prevents the drum from going any
lower. We installed it and it works perfectly, and even turns with the drum
so minimizes wear and tear.

He will be manufacturing these and selling them to those on the list who
have to replace their forestays. Remember to send the lower drum to the
rigger when having the new forestay made. I will take a picture of the
bushing and post it as soon as I can.
