Ron,
I noticed the condition of your VHF connector in the picture of your
masthead.  I have to agree that it needs a new connector.  I've been told
that the basic design of coaxial cable is such that if the shielding and
core are exposed to moisture, even briefly, they will wick the moisture into
the guts of the cable and greatly reduce the cable's effectiveness.

I don't have any personal experience with "wet" coax; but I've gotten the
same advise from ham radio gurus and cable vendors. The vendors even keep
the ends of the wire on spools capped.
