Chris:

I did not get into LED's as replacements of boat and car bulbs until
last year, even thought I sold them for 15 years. The problem with LED's is
that until the high brightness LED's came out, they did not emit sufficient
Lumens for such applications. There is still the problem of their being
very directional. That is, you do not see them unless looking directly at
the emitter.
There is the issue was their low voltage rating. Instead of
resistors, they are putting a number in series. When this technique is
used, I would like to know if they all go out and the light fails?
Considering their long life this may be a non issue.
According to Russ, Triad trailer will use LED's for his trailers
lights. You might request his input on the subject.
There was a discussion on this list a few years back about using red
LED cabin lights. I believe there are several who have installed them.
There was a comment on this list a couple of months back about
replacing the steaming light with an LED fixture. Was it done and does it
work well?
Still one thing to consider is that with current technology, LED are
still not as bright as an old fashion light bulb. On blue water, it might
not be seen at distance. While for us lake sailors, that may not be as much
a factor.
I now have several of the LED flashlights. For casual use they work
fine. Again, for serious light you need the big old fashion type lanterns.
That is at least this year.

Ed,
You had a link about LED's in your response to Lou. Have you
replaced any of your bulbs with the automotive replacement LED's? If so how
do they compare? Anyone else out there in Rhodes land done the deed?
