[Rhodes22-list] Some recent photos

Wally,

I've been about that close to a bald eagle once in my life. My two sons,
brother-in-law, & I were backpacking on Garden Island, a small uninhabited
island about 30 nm offshore in northern Lake Michigan. We were bushwacking
off trail, fighting our way thru tall saw grass following the shoreline. We
rounded a point of land & came upon a bald eagle feasting on a cormorant on
the beach right by the water's edge. Our group had been pretty quiet & the
eagle must have preoccupied with its meal because we just stepped out of the
grass & happened upon the scene. The eagle gave a loud, surprised
"scrack!", looked very annoyed in the way only a big raptor can look pissed
off, & took off out over the water, leaving the carcass behind. It didn't
go far, circled back to land in the top of a tree about 60 yards inland in
the middle of coastal marshy area, and just watched us. As we walked
further along that beach, we came across the shredded carcasses of about a
dozen cormorants within a half mile. The encounter happened so fast that
nobody got a picture! We all just stood there with our mouths hanging open.

Other than that, my bald eagle sightings have always been thru binoculars
from 100 yards away or more.
