Peter:

Is the " Graco 3800 High Volume Low Pressure cup sprayer" one of these
painting systems that do not propel the paint with air pressure?

Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Repainting mast and boom

Gary,

Welcome to the list, if this is your first post.

I painted the mast and boom on my Starwind 19 in 2002 (see photo
attached)
and am happy to share what I know.

Akzo-Noble, a global corporation, owns many paint companies including
Awl
Grip (for commercial marine use), Interlux (with some products designed
for
boat owners to use at home) and International Paint (industrial
applications). They all make a full line of epoxies, silicone based
paints
and polyurethanes. Interlux at www.yachtpaint.com. is best suited for
sailors like us and has a technical help desk with experts that will
steer
you in the right direction. These guys are also avid sailors as well.
Many
of their products can be rolled or brushed to achieve good results. You
can
purchase at Defender, West Marine, or many stocking yards.

We used Interlux Inter-thane Plus two-part polyurethane paint applied
with a
Graco 3800 High Volume Low Pressure cup sprayer. First, the mast must be
removed of all old paint and contaminates. Clean thoroughly first, then
sand, then clean again. (You don't want to grind dirt into the work with
sandpaper). Use Interlux cleaning solvents only. A very thin coat of
special two-part primer must be applied on metal to enable the
polyurethane
to adhere. Then 2-3 coats polyurethane. You must sequence the 2nd and
3rd
coat of polyurethane according to manufacturer's directions. It is
possible
for that paint to get so hard it will it not stick to itself, if you
wait
too long.

Interthane-Plus is a top of the line, high gloss product. An additive is
availble if you prefer a more dull finish. It is like embedding your
mast
in material similar to which bowling balls are made. However, if I did
not
already own the equipment, I would try application with a hot-dog roller
and
tip with a brush - like the Interlux paint manual describes. Be sure
to
use their brushing reducer. If you follow the manual to the letter, you
will get excellent results.

Good luck!
