the word of the days is weather, good weather no problem, bad weather because you are pressed for time is bad. it really as simple
as that. hellgate and the race have tide and timing problem, wind over tide can lead to some big waves. ny harbor has lots big
traffic that is fast moving in tight quarters. the south side of the island is the Atlantic, weather again. the sound side is more
sheltered, I would do the bronx/nt habor/montalk in one nonstop leg(good weather only) and the gunnhole on the sound side. The
cursing guilds are a good investment, make sure to have your seatow card and a good VHF for the Mac. Make sure he keep 24 hours of
fuel on the boat and has good ground tackle.

Has anyone sailed around Long Island?

I have an offer to crew with cousin Tom to attempt such in his (ahem) Mac 26x (Please, no wisecracks - it has a 50 hp motor and can
move quickly as necessary). Looking for some opinions, advice and perhaps local knowledge.

What is best time of year to attempt that trip in a "non-bluewater" boat?

Can you stay in the ditch most of the way?

What are the best spots to gunkhole? (Are there any left?)

Could it be done in 7 days?

PT
