[Rhodes22-list] Genoa question

Bob,

If you are into that heavy of a description, there are a couple of
Rhodes owners not, not on the list who sail out of somewhere in
northeastern North Carolina or Southeastern Virginia who seriously race
their boats. All I know is that they have standard rigs, and tuned to
speed. I met one but I am not that serious about racing. I did not
keep contact information. But like that science fiction program used to
say, "They are out there ..."

Bob,

Like many technical things, the best answer to your question is "it

depends". I'll try to explain.

The method of describing headsail size is expressed as a percent of the

perpendicular distance from the luff to the clew (not a horizontal

measurement) divided by the "J" dimension - the horizontal measurement

(parallel to the waterline) from the headsail tack point to the front of
the

mast. Therefore, a headsail that is a "decksweeper" might not extend
past

the cabinhouse and measure to be a "180". Alternately, the same sail
recut

to have a much higher clew also near, but much above the cabinhouse,
might

measure to be a "135". In the second example, the sail would loose lots
of

area from the foot and would therefore be much less powerful and justify
the

lower measurement.

To check your headsail you can spread it out someplace, say in your
garage

or basement, and measure the perpendicular distance from the luff to the

clew. Divide this distance by the R22 "J" dimension and you will know

exactly what size it is. Off hand I don't know what J is for an R22,
but

I'll bet there are lots of folks on this list that do.

Fair and warmer winds to you.

130%, 150%, 175%

On my Rhodes 22 the clue of the Genoa reaches to the end of the coach
roof.

Can any one compare this to known Genoas and estimate the size of my

Headsail?

thanks

I have been thinking along those lines as well, But I probably won't do

it all at once.

UPS this year then perhaps going to a 130-150 with CDI furler next

season. There is

nothing worse than being out there with just a wisp, and enough chop to

spill any

air out. (Well maybe I can think of worse things...)
