Keith,

Deb & I just got back from a nice sunset boat ride on our lake. While I was
out, it occurred to me another way in which an interference between the boom
& the backstays could be created during an accidental gibe.

If you were really out in 20 knots of wind; then, that's a pretty high wind
speed to have the boom in the upper position. If you either don't have a
boom vang or didn't have the boom vang snugged down tight to prevent the
boom from rising up; then, 20 knots of wind would have caused the aft end of
the boom to rise up. This effect would be most prevalent on a downwind
point of sail like a run or a broad reach. If the boom was in the upper
position & wind pressure was causing the aft end of the boom to rise up &
then you did an uncontrolled gibe, it's possible that everything could line
up wrong & you'd get an interference between the boom & the backstay. If
you have a boom vang; then, snug it down tight to prevent this interference
from reoccurring. Normally, the boom is dropped to the lower position when
the wind pressure on the mainsail is sufficiently strong to cause the aft
end of the boom to rise up. Then, of course a controlled gibe is best
wherein the sheet is trimmed in until the boom is across the centerline &
only then let out.

What do you think happened?
