Roger, thanks for your suggestion but for those of us who can't find a
library which keeps a 25 year old sailing book, can you describe the barber
hauler function or design a bit more? It might even be mentioned in a newer
book which I haven't found either.

I can see how it might have some advantage in racing for fine tuning the
angle or pressure of the sheet on the genoa, but if you're using a roller
furling genoa you'll still need tracks. I've put off installing tracks on
my boat and have to tie a second line to the clew which pulls straight down
to one of the chainplates to keep the clew from rising, in order to get the
right angle on the genoa sheet. Maybe that's what a barber hauler does?

Hi Everybody,

For those of you that are thinking about installing inboard genoa tracks on
your boat &/or wondering about the correct way to use them, please go to the
library and read the following reference:

Rick Grajirena, "The Barber-Hauler, Ins and Out of A Genoa Sheeting Device",
in , "More SAIL Trim", (SAIL Books, Boston, MA, 1979), Charles Mason,
editor,
ISBN 0-914814-18-4, pp. 20-23

The author of this short article, Rick Grajirena, discusses the design & use
of a simple block & tackle device called a "barber-hauler" that effectively
does away with need for movable genoa cars, rerouting genoa sheets inboard &
outboard of the shrouds, & switching from inboard to outboard genoa tracks.
Mr. Grajirena certainly has the sailing credentials to recommend the
barber-hauler. He has been manager of Hood Sailmakers, coached the US
Olymipic 470 sailing team, & has won multiple US & international
championships
in various classes of sailing dingys

For most of you, using a barber-hauler might be a much simpler way of life
than having to fool with rerouting sheets, switching genoa tracks, etc.
