Vic,

If you can always see the shore, charts are all you need.  But if distance or 
haze prevents you from seeing landmarks, a $150 hand held GPS is invaluable.  
Just enter your waypoints from the chart.

Even if you just sail in sight of shore, it is great to know how long it will 
be before you reach your destination.  I find guests just like to know how 
long they will need to hold it without using the head.
