Bush Lets Weapons Ban Lapse, Locks Up Criminal Vote
(2004-09-14) -- In a bold political masterstroke,
President George W. Bush has locked up the vote of
violent criminals by allowing a ban on certain
semi-automatic rifles, shotguns and handguns to lapse.

"This is shameless vote-buying," said Democrat
presidential candidate John Forbes Kerry. "Mr. Bush is
clearly pandering to mass murderers and terrorists who
are overwhelmingly Republicans."

Mr. Kerry, who is also a U.S. Senator, said his
campaign would dispatch teams of attorneys to all of
the nation's maximum security penitentiaries to make
sure "there's no electoral shenanigans on November 2."

White House spokesman Scott McClellan refused to
directly address Mr. Kerry's accusations, but said,
"If the Senator wants to find dangerous criminals who
use weapons, prisons are a good place to look thanks
to the efforts of this administration to enforce
existing laws."

President Bush, on the campaign trail, called the
lapse of the assault weapons ban "a great example of
Sen. Kerry's leadership abilities."

"The 20-year veteran senator, and Democrat party
standard bearer, did his best to rally his Democrat
colleagues to his cause," said Mr. Bush, "Therefore,
the ban has lapsed. Next question."
