Phyllis,

What size genny do you have? Is it hanked on or furler? Make sure you have 
your head stay nice and tight. Same with jib halyard. If you have the GBI 
furler this doesn't apply, no halyard.

A furled 170 does not head upwind real well. A 125 or 135 works much better. 
Have you tried sheeting inside the outer shrouds? Some have a second set of 
tracks to help upwind performance.

Remember don't pinch.
