[Rhodes22-list] Resistance is futile

You know, I read a lot about "efficient sailing", and how various boats sail better at various degrees, and that virtually none of them sail well with "the rail in the water", but I agree with your "resistance is futile", or at least it's silly.

Don't get me wrong, I typically try to sail "well." However, I remember back in my motorcycle days - cutting donuts or pulling block long wheelies wasn't "efficient" bike riding. You get right down to it, the type of sailing most of us do isn't very "efficient transportation" at all. We go out very slowly, and then very slowly work our way - back to where we started. Not even stopping to get a loaf of bread or gallon of milk on the way.

I guess my rambling point is, it's important to know how to sail properly. However, it's also good to have fun with your boat. When I have the right people on board, I still try to put my windows in the water from time to time.

I've been restoring Magic Moments (an '86 Rhodes 22) - with the intention of
sailing in Lake Saint Claire in Michigan.

The UV cover on the headsail needs to be re-stitched, and the main needs a
bit of repair - in truth, I should probably replace the sails . . . there
are still a few lines that should be replaced soon . . .

but she's in the water!

Sailing her has been a joy - initially getting a feel for the IMF and
playing with the sails to see how best to control her trim. Initially I
resisted the urge to put a rail in the water, then decided that resistance
is futile . . .

I'd like to read more about others experiences, repairs, etc - but how do I
open the 118 Mb archive file (it has a 'mbox' file extension)? I'd like to
use a desktop search engine to explore previous posts, but don't know how to
get into it.

Thanks - Dennis
